I recently stopped masking. I masked as a super girly woman (I recently came out as non-binary) for my all of high school years and early 20s. Here is me at 11 or 12 before I started masking in 7th grade.

Here is how I dress now that I don’t mask:

I never associated with the emo culture because I don’t condone self harm and prefer bands like The Birthday Massacre, Amaranthe, The 69 Eyes, Arch Enemy and Lacuna Coil to Good Charlotte and Simple Plan (although I’m guilty of listening to both). Do I seem more goth or emo? I’m 28.

Neither. To me, the person in these images looks like someone trying on dark clothing to no particular effect.

I concur with Fnord. Such clothing you are wearing in these pics only have neutral effect.

Those are both me. What do you mean by no particular effect?

I'd kind of have to agree it doesn't look particularly goth or emo, maybe that you just prefer dark color clothing. I like to wear a lot of black to, but I wouldn't say I have a very specific style.

I could see that being the case.

You look pretty normal and both terms basically turned into synonyms for kids who dress in dark clothes and listen to gloomy music.

More silver jewelry and dark makeup for goth.

"Goth" and "Emo" are more attitudinal than apparitional.  This is Goth...

Image

Note the sartorial elegance of their Victorian-era clothing and the heavy makeup on the woman.  This is Emo...

Image

Note the affectation of death-images, piercings, and the overall lack of fashion sense.

Basically, Goths are classy, and Emos are not.

I don't believe you appear "Goth," or "Emo."

I knew Goths even before they were known as "Goths."

It takes more than black clothing to put on the "Goth" or "Emo" image.

There's a cool "Goth" character in the show NCIS, named Abby.

She is a Goth, and she is smart.

If you want to look like a Goth, Google her.

I'm not really sure what an "Emo" looks like, actually.

Some years ago a coworker described "emo". Its a type of music. Somewhere between grunge, and metal in which the male singer screams emotionally. Told the coworker that Id rather listen to Teddy Pendergrass or to Otis Redding if I am in the mood to hear a dude put emotion into his voice. Later I learned that that there is a more extreme version of Emo called "Screamo" (makes sense). But those are music styles. I wasnt aware that Emo and Screamo had also taken on a fashion look like "Goth".

I guess that the difference between Goth and Emo is that Goth has to have a Victorian vibe to it (like steam punk movies). So you gotta wear heavy 19th century clothing. Which makes sense because the "Goth" in "looking Goth" derives from the "Gothic novels" (spooky stories, mysteries, proto sci fi) of the 19th Century (not directly from the "Goths and Visigoths" barbarian tribes of late Roman times.

It can be a pretty effective technique and represents a different approach to the other, earlier offshoots of punk and hardcore.
