Fuel shortages in the UK
I've been hearing on the news lately about the shortages of fuel at petrol stations and supplies at supermarkets in the UK. Apparently it's been easing over the last couple of days, but I'm curious to hear from UK residents about how widespread this has actually been.
For context: https://edition.cnn.com/2021/09/30/busi ... index.html
For nearly a week, British motorists have found service stations closed and long lines at those that still had gasoline and diesel. The shortages provoked an angry response from some members of the public, and made life difficult for drivers across the country.
The root cause was an acute shortage of tanker drivers, exacerbated since the start of this year by Brexit. But panic buying made the situation much worse. Emergency government action designed to ease the crisis — including putting army truck drivers on standby — may do little to fix the underlying problem.

It didn't really affect me because I don't drive. A lot of the local petrol stations did run out of fuel. One sold three days worth in one day and had to wait nine days for a fresh delivery.
There was no violence because of near where I live so I was glad about that. I'm in the North West and it is getting better here. Its more down south where they are still running low.

I had driven up to near London to visit my daughter last weekend and very nearly couldnt drive back on Sunday. I spent hours trying to find an open fuel station on Saturday and all were closed. I was lucky to spot a fuel tanker pulling into one and waited there until it had offloaded and the garage opened. This took a while and there was a big line of cars behind me when I filled up. The next morning it was closed again - so if I hadnt managed to fill up when I did I wouldnt have been able to drive home in time for work on Monday.
Since then, over the past week, it has been not too much of a problem to fill up here in the west country - however I have noticed a number of fuel stations having to close at times as their stocks have run out. Others are limiting fill ups to no more than 30 pounds.
According to the news the army are on standby to drive tankers to keep everything moving.

Not really had any problems here in the north west of England. There were a few days where supplies were a bit short but no serious problems now. As a key worker I like to keep the tanks of both my car and campervan full so I can get to work and haven't had any significant issues doing so. Things seem to be a bit different in the south east of England.
A shortage of suitably qualified tanker drivers seems to be the problem. Something about reaping what we sow springs to mind. There is no actual shortage of fuel. The problem is one of distribution.

Thanks for the replies. Always good to hear from people on the ground, rather than just relying on news summaries. I hope things are getting better.
Are there problems with food production/processing as well? I've been hearing that imports from the EU might have to be increased to cover a potential shortfall in the lead-up to Christmas.
