What would our Asperger/Autism Similator DO?
Seriously, if someone actually got this task done
How would it look, what images or sensations would it send?

It is worn on the head.

i would like to write down the "just DO it" speech my mom gives me when i don't want to do things like call people or socialize or ask for things.

then i want to take her skydiving (she is afraid of heights) and recite it back to her.

that would be a good simulation, i think, but you can't wear it on your head.

It'd give you an entirely different experience every time you booted it up.

it would sit in its room and refuse to talk to you.

It would probably be like "what this isn't how it is..."

Kind of like those drunken goggles, and flight simulators, and simulated bacon bits.

It would probably spend all it's free time with the cats.

i like how the op stated, "it is worn on the head" to avoid exactly the type of response the entire thread consists of.


i think a good asperger's simulation would be as follows:

person A (to whom as is being simulated) is blindfolded and given headphones. an extra sensitive microphone is placed in the room and all background noises are amplified through the headphones.

person B does not speak, but communicates using the speech function on a mac, which is also connected to the headphones. person B has previously memorized a series of nonsensical phrases coded to represent actual objects or ideas (to simulate aspie's literal interpretation of certain phrases) (another idea would be to use literally translate idioms from a language not spoken by the simulatee).

they then attempt to hold a conversation.



another possibility is to arrange a social event, in which a group of people have learned a previously determained code which connects phrases and actions with ideas they are not normally associated with (for example, placing one's hand on one's chest could mean "i'm happy" or saying, "i'm thirsty" could mean "i don't want to talk to you").

the simulatee, unaware of the code, would be instructed to either successfully communicate an idea or get another person to perform an action.

I would also go with the super-amp headphones, but also make a pair of special goggles with liquid TV screens in them. These would make you see everything with the colors turned up all the way and slightly magnify and distort your environment. Faces would be almost totally fuzzed out. The person must also wear tight and itchy clothes.
Then have the person go sit with a group of people who have been told to give instructions for tasks in Klingon. The wearer gets punished if he cannot comply. Be as condescending as possible to him throughout the entire experience.
Now, if only I could get my dad to wear one of these...

I'd say my post was pretty damn on-topic. AS affects everyone slightly differently - severity of various symptoms, obsession, blah blah blah. I think it was very reasonable, in fact. No two people could use the simulator and understand AS in the same way.
