Bridge Mixture (I think there may be a slightly different name for it outside of Canada), is an assortment of candies and nuts covered in milk or dark chocolate. A couple of weeks ago my brother was visiting and I bought him a bag of Bridge Mixture after my mother told me he likes them. But when I gave it to him he said "OLD PEOPLE candy!" 8O

He was just teasing me, but I never thought of Bridge Mixture as "old people" candy. I remember buying and eating it when I was a teenager and no one told me then it was for "old people". I think old people candy are hard candy mints or "humbugs" that grandparents keep in dishes but never really eat them, and then they slightly melt and stick together into one big lump and taste like they're a million years old. My grandfather liked individually wrapped candies like toffee and these kind of hard candy mints with soft chocolate or coffee-flavored stuff in the center.

I told my brother next time I'll get him some "kid's candy" like... jelly beans. But then he reminded me that Ronald Regan liked them, apparently. Oops.

Bridge Mix, where I grew up. I loved candy as a kid, but did not like bridge mix. I have not seen it in stores since I was a kid.

Sounds good, wish I had some.
To me old folks candy is those horrible fake butterscotch candies, peppermints and those nasty chocolate covered cherry cordials.

Lol, I hope not. I like the Bridge Mix but haven't seen it in stores the past few years. Now I'm hungry :P

It's name came from being associated with Bridge card games, which is typically played by older people.

I read about the possible origins of the name, including eating them while playing bridge, and another being that they just took the assorted candies that got stuck under the conveyor belt, which was nicknamed a 'bridge". The second theory doesn't sound too appetizing. :)

Maybe I should get my brother a box of Nerds, because that's what he is. :nerdy:

"Bridge mix or Grand Slam mix is a type of snack mix or candy consisting of nuts, fruits, and "cremes" all covered in chocolate.  Some common ingredients in bridge mix include peanuts, raisins, macadamia nuts, ju-jubes, malt, fruits, nougat, and licorice." -- Wikipedia

Oh, so "Bridge Mix" is like dumping a few Whitman's Samplers into a large bowl.

"Old People" candy?

No, just randomized chocolate-covered candy, that is all!

I always liked them as a kid and still do now, but rarely buy them - mostly because I'll eat the whole bag.

They come in a few different sized bags and smaller boxes w/ yellow packaging like this:

The actual candies/nuts are all chocolate covered, but in this pic some are sliced in half so you can see what they are inside:

Kinda neat having a surprise flavour/texture mix.

I guess they are kind of an "old persons candy." I mean, who plays bridge? ANYONE? Like the entire generation of people who even played that card game are all dead now and only the candy mix named for it lives on.
