Well I'm still at that place preparing ore samples for analysis as announced some time back in '05. I did get very fed-up at one point and was just about ready to hand in my resignation but I stuck it out anyway. A new management came in November '06 and things have gotten so much better. The head honcho and I get along flawlessly and everybody else on the floor... well put it this way: they all know about my tic and my sleeping disorder that is co-morbid with it and there is a mutual respect such as I never met in any work place before.

There have been situations where I had to "fluff my feathers" but it all worked out good both for me and for them. There have been some issues some times but we all got to sit down and address them head-on. At that work place we all know this is where our bread is buttered, we all have a job to do, and life is hard enough without turning the place into some kind of soap opera.

That being said, I'm not seeking a job anywhere else for mow. Running away from one set of problems can only lead to meeting a whole new set of problems at Point B anyway. What better reason to kick myself out of bed so early in the morning

Most times I get on okay with my co-workers. If I were in a team where either the co-worker sitting next to me or my boss was giving me a hard time, I would ask to be shifted to a different team. The people who usually lock horns with me are the ones who believe in micromanagement and blind conformity.

I get along well with everybody. Usually I am recognized as "nice" by everybody and I get voted as whatever-of-the-month and such.

It's just very tiring for me to keep it up. Mentally, I mean. Being reasonably sociable comes at a price.

I get along pretty well... I'm kind of like comic relief I guess. It's all generally well meaning though... I help people mellow out and can get along with most people if they give me a chance.

I had a job for 6 years and quit last summer... even though the employees I worked with joked around a lot... I knew they didn't want to see me leave. I kept a little contact with them... ate lunch there from time to time... and they always asked when I was coming back.

To my shame... I actually did come back this summer. And they again generally appreciate my company...

I sometimes think... perhaps I am not an Aspie at all.

Then I start to think how I get overlooked and unappreciated for the work I do. Where no one really understands the problems I have calling people up and dealing with customers.

It took a long time to be comfortable too... at first I was very quiet. I worked in the basement... and I had a phobia of going upstairs to talk with anyone. Interacting with my Boss is still uncomfortable and stilted.

I haven't worked for 2 years, but at my last job I had trouble getting along with people. Some of it was my fault, but a lot of it wasn't. I should say that there were a few people I got along well with, but some people took things I said the wrong way, and then disliked me or held a grudge against me, some of it was because I was too socially inept to understand the dynamics of work environment relationships. I think I pissed of the wrong person, and they tried to turn people against me. I eventually quit because I was sick of the job and the BS with co-workers.

Work for me is just that: work. I want to be able to show up on time, perform spectacularly, get my money, and go home, just like it says in my contract.

Those who insist I live by their 'unwritten rules' (making mindless chit-chat f'rinstance...) are the source of conflict in my workplace.

Very well said, UncleBeer.

And that's why I don't let myself get too close to my colleagues.

If they want us to follow all their silly rules, they should write them down. Of course, that then leaves it open for us to challenge some of their ideas and I suppose they wouldn't want that.

Uncle Beer

I try to just go in and do my job but, invariably, its not possible. Its the unwritten rules that come into play and scupper me.

Any advice on how to do just the former?

This is ultimately what lead me to seek out an official AS diagnosis: bullying at work, and about trivial, 'unwritten rules' stuff. My local autism center has an employment advocate who's currently rattling the boss's cage. :D

The last job I had(worked there for 4 years),I didnt get along with more then a few staff.I thought management was incompitently organized and 80% of the staff were pathologicaly lazy(literally pathological in their abiltity to avoid doing work). The hardest part of this was because we were supposed to be helping people with disabilities. It's bad enough when You are just making "widgits" but these were People who depended on us...I think I am still suffering from PTSD from this job.

My current job seems to attract more,"aspie like" people. They may not be aspies but they arent NT either.I think it is because we work with animals and most of them actually care about them.We only have about 50% lazy "stoner types",unfortunatly, one is assistant manager. One of the other women is about my age and we seem to realte about many things,it's great working with her....very rare.
