Just like a rolling stone.

Does this line in the Bob Dylan song have any connection to the Rolling Stones?

I always took it to have been taken from the saying: a rolling stone gathers no moss.

The song seems to be Dylan's way of taking a jab at a woman who used to have it all, and who then lost it all.

Although he also seems to express a little encouragement when he sang:

"When you ain't got nothing, you got nothing to lose
You're invisible now, you got no secrets to conceal"

I just largely associate "rolling stone" with the band. When I hear it, I think of the band.

The term predates the band. It just means "someone without a home...who wanders". The Sixties British blues based band took its name from the phrase precisely because it appeared in the songs of their American blues idols. Particularly this song by Muddy Waters.

It seems to me that a rolling stone can mean a lot of things and not necessarily that it is related to the rolling stones. In mythology, there was a man who received punishment from the gods and for eternity he had to roll a stone up a hill, but the stone always rolled down. This is my favorite mythological legend.

Some people may have thought of the song Blue Monday when they saw the thread title.
