It depends. If you mean eggs in general, eggs came long before chickens. If you mean specifically chicken eggs, the answer is more complex.

I never have breakfast and I might have chicken for lunch. I might have a salad containing egg for dinner.

I don't like chicken.
Eggs are OK if there's yolk, but never with bacon.

Eggs came first.

If you means "eggs of the chicken species" then the answer is 'the egg came first', because the first true fully evolved chicken had to have hatched from an egg. And that egg would have been "the first true chicken egg".

That egg would have been laid a prehistoric chicken-like bird that had almost, but not completely, evolved into a chicken.

Perhaps the egg layer would have been a now extinct 'saber toothed chicken'!

A bird that would have made YOU into a fricassee. Lol!

Just kidding.

It would have been a wild Southeast Asian jungle pheasant of the kind that still crows in the morning in the jungles of Thailand and Vietnam- from which the prehistoric locals developed the first domestic chickens several thousand years ago.

The egg came first. The animal that predated chickens must have laid an egg that had a modern chicken at one point.

I believe they both appeared at exactly the same time in a chicken omelette. :)

I remember reading an article recently where it was said that some scientists believe that the chicken came first before the chicken eggs. They said that certain features of chicken eggs could have only come from chickens, not from non-chickens.

I got told that so I said "Chicken" and gave my reasons why and the person thought it was funny. Could not see why my answer was funny though.

In the question the chicken usually comes first.
