Over the years I noticed that women absolutely love ciders and men love lagers and ales. This becomes obvious in pubs. Why is that?

I don't know, but I don't like lagers. I do like a nice pale ale and would go for that over a cider. I do like that Sotma fruit cider LIDL sell though.

Is it taste or is cider perceived as a more feminine drink?

Cider used to be the cheapest way to get blotto, so I saw the cider/lager divide as a money thing. Don't remember any woman drinking cider in my day.

Ive noticed over the years that it's generally the women who pick ciders at pubs with my mother being a cider drinker herself.

Men seem mostly go for lagers and ales with the older men picking ales.

I have a preference for ales as I think they vary in taste more than lagers. Ciders vary in taste the most but are always sour to an extent. I prefer pear and berry ciders over the classic apple and citrus ales can be really nice.

I think women tend to prefer sweet drinks too. Wines and ciders seem more common than lagers and ales when they go to the bar. The sweetness seems to be the common denominator.

That being said, considering a lot of lagers and ales taste a bit crap compared to ciders, I don't really know why men take a crappy lager over a good cider.

If you go to some pubs, you'll probably notice. Once the preference is in your mind you'll notice it every time you go to a pub. It'll surprise you.

I am male. I have a sweet-tooth. I like most apple ciders...but I would choose hard pear cider first.

Don't like cider or lager. Much prefer real dark ale or red wine.

Most of the people I've known who have gone for cider are simply looking for cheap booze when they aren't lager people...that or people with gluten sensitivities. It hasn't much been a male female divide though...pretty evenly split across the board from my own observations anyhow.

Personally, I'm not a lager person, and if I'm looking for a low alcohol percentage drink, I go for cider. But I also prefer the cider to be ridiculously sweet...like pineapple or strawberry. I think those are good.

I'll take your word on it, I don't do pubs any more - too dangerous for someone like me with a thousand-yard-stare.

I'm not much of a drinker but I ocasionally drink largers & ales. I never had cider or wine. I love sweets like candy & snacks but I'm not into fruit. I think there is a bit of a stereotype of fruity drinks being more feminine & harder drinks being more masculine. I think the social circle & perhaps also the stereoetype contributes to women being exposed to ciders & wines more whereas guys are exposed to ales & largers more. Women drink fruity drinks because that's what the other women they are hanging with drink whereas guys drink harder stuff because that's what the other guys they are hanging with drink.

I like lager best, it's more refreshing compared to an ale.
I used to drink cider but for some reason it gives me a banger of a headache now, sometimes while I'm still drinking it

Gender norms & societal expectations, probably mostly.

Ciders are sold here, but in quite low volume compared to other drinks. Coolers used to be the thing for women 30 years ago, but now there are so many premixed cocktails for sweet drinks and then the last couple years has been fruit flavoured vodka soda's w/ no sweetness at all. And of course people can order a mixed drink, martini, cocktail, high ball or whatever else from a bar.

But I guess we DO also have quite a variety of ciders sold in cans.. several local brands since we do produce a lot of apples and other fruits here. They just don't sell in anywhere near the volume of beers. And the beer market isn't just lagers and ales anymore, there's a massive market of craft beers of all types now. Literally hundreds of options, maybe more - you'd have to tour around dozens of different liquor stores and craft breweries to make a dent in the options available.

20 years ago the big upcoming thing was BC wines and Ice Wines - a lot of which gets exported. 10 years ago it was all the new craft breweries turning out new beer flavours all the time. (and they still do) Now, due to licencing/regulation changes, the new thing are micro-distilleries making new local gins & whiskeys, vodkas, liqueurs etc. I Guess it was next to impossible to start a distillery here before and now things have opened up so the next wave in alcohol trends is hitting the market and growing.

After that market matures I'm not sure what else things might pivot to or add ?? Maybe some sort of ethnic specialty drinks from around the world that we've not really seen here ? I dunno what other major category there could be. Although one new revival that I was very impressed by every aspect except for the premium price tag is multiple flavours of not-too-sweet mead being made and canned in Vancouver. I sampled ~5 flavours and drank 2 cans and it was REALLY Good! I like their super old school (the original alcoholic beverage to humans) revival and their flavourings. Bonus if it helps actually bring back honey bee populations because people like to get tipsy on the stuff. http://www.humblebeemead.com/

I abused cider in my teens, it got to a point where my body would instantly reject cider - even a mouthful. :pale:
