Why and How Are Guns/Phones/Computers, All Labeled Machine?

Please explain,

'machine' gun?

Machines?

Factory machines?

How are these all machines? I know what a label is and when it's being used.

Don't you feel the powers that be went a little overboard with the word 'machine'?

How is a projectiled weapon the same as a handheld phone?

That's just confusing to me.

Because all of these objects fit the base definition of what a machine is.

Machine is used very broadly because what makes something a machine is very simple.

Well, they're all something that's put together, no?
That's the root meaning.

There were no powers to be involved, it's just how language evolves.

Ah now I see.

Thank you two for replying.

I had the definition of a machine as some sort of hunk of souless metal.

...an old fashion-y view. I blame it on ignorance.

And ty funeralxempire, now I'm gonna think of everything as a thing. I have a lot to think about today :D
