What kind of examples do you have, of people in positions of authority, that played favorites and treated someone better or worse ? Teachers, bosses, etc

I don't think this topic best fits the category of social skills and making friends. Unless you have it's talking about "Friends" leaving some people at the bottom of their list, inviting them to get-togethers, while leaving others out.

If you refer to the workplace, a colleague appears to invite everyone else in their department to celebrate their wedding while you and a few others are left out because they were close friends.
