The latest issue of the New Yorker has an article by washington post music critic tim page titled: Parallel Play: Living with Asperger's Syndrome.

The New Yorker is a pay site. Does anyone out there have access to the article, and would you be willing to mildly infringe copyright law by posting it on WP?

I just heard the segment on NPR on tonight's(08/13/07) "All Things Considered". They interviewed Tim Page the author of "Parallel Play: Living with Asperger’s syndrome" is a writer, editor, producer and music critic. He is a Pulitzer Prize-winning music critic for the Washington Post.

I can hardly wait for my copy to arrive!

I've been waiting for them to have a story on ASD, figured they'd get to it eventually...
This week's issue hasn't arrived yet, it usually comes on Weds.
Am full of anticipation at the prospect. It's the only magazine I subscribe to. Really enjoy the writing style, even for topics that don't initially interest me-and since getting dx'd I'm very interested in the subject.

I flipped through a copy of the New Yorker at Borders this PM. When it arrives at my local library I may Xerox just the article.

It's a good introduction to AS for the non-expert. I cringed with recognition at some of Page's childhood memories. One thing I COMPLETELY UNDERSTOOD: Page said that where authors usually have a "Thanks to..." section in their books where they acknowledge their friends, Page wanted to have a "Sorry..." section where he apologized to everybody he unknowingly hurt or offended because of his AS.

I got a copy of the New Yorker today and read it. It's the best AS article I've ever read in a mainstream publication.

I read the article today. It was very moving. It evoked so much of what aspergers is like. At the end I really felt sorry for the author, myself, and all AS people. The things we miss and the gifts we have were all very well illustraited. Highly recommended.

A terrific article!

Here's a link to a snippet Tim Page when he was filmed as a child:

Why did it make you feel sorry for people with AS? It didn't make me feel sorry at all.

Some of us Asperger's Syndrome folks are actually worthy of other's feelings of compassion.

Some aren't.

Just like everybody.

I wish I could read it.
Don't get it here, and too late to get it if they did sell it here, I imagine :( It sounds very interesting.

Alex,

I have felt a lot of the same way he did: lost in many areas, particularly social ones. I also had some serious genius talents that went nowhere. I also needlessly caused others pain and needlessly made my life difficult by not recognizing my differences and making the most of them in a conscientious way. Certain particular things in his life really matched my experiences (Wagner and minimalism, no s**t!), like the failures with women and the disappointment of just about everyone around you. It all added up to a very, very familiar pastiche of fascinatingly wonderful differences and utterly heart-wrenching (for me, anyway) descriptions of what we do to drive NTs crazy.

I think your generation (not to sound like an old fart) has it a little better. AFAIK, you are in your early 20s and seem to have found good ways (WP, etc.) of dealing with AS. For the writer and myself, we made it well into adulthood while thinking that we were messed up in ways that really reflected badly on us. While I don't think I agree that we are "messed up" now that I know about AS , their is a nexus of pain and missed opportunity that can never go away. Thinking about my experiences as such and knowing about others having similar ones really made the article an intense experience for me. I just couldn't stop thinking about the pain that humanity has meted upon us, not because of hostility, but just simple ignorance. That made me feel very sorry for us with AS.
