I've been unmasking in my classes and it's refreshing. I'm a junior in college, and I haven't been making eye contact, I've been flapping my hands instead of gripping the sides of the desk and rocking back and forth when I want to. I love it, and I don't want to go back. I find myself far less drained at the end of the day and feeling more positive in general since I'm just being myself! At the beginning of the year most of my profs have a little survey asking questions about you as a student and the last one is usually "is there anything else you'd like me to know about you?" and I say that I'm autistic and that I won't make eye contact but that doesn't mean I'm not paying attention. So far everyone has been fine with it and it hasn't impacted my contributing to class or anything. This is just a happy post to say that I'm feeling good.

When I stopped masking, social interaction became less stressful for me (while still being very stressful). Though it likely became more confusing for people I have social interactions with.

That's great news. Society needs to be more accepting of autism.

It sounds like you might be a good ambassador from our world to theirs! Thanks!

I'm happy to hear unmasking has worked for you. My only concern is that your very obvious stimming such as flapping and rocking may attract the attention of bullies.

I don't really mask anymore not for any particular reason other than I am burnt out.

Oh my goodness!! You made my day reading this. This actually gives me a glimmer of hope. Thank you so much for sharing this. I am so proud of you for disclosing and I am so thrilled that you can be authentic in your classes and that your profs and classmates are supportive. That is so AWESOME! Well done you!!

That is definitely a concern but since she has disclosed to her professors the staff will most likely be very supportive of her if anyone bullies her.

University is fortunately a much better place in that regard than school. Maybe there would be issues in halls, but those don't tend to have the same people in them as in your classes anyway.

I want to unmask at school because it's so exhausting but it's like second nature for me I feel like :( I just always feel tense at school.
