I've noticed that lettuce seems to have disappeared from some cheap meals, like sandwiches and wraps. For instance, McDonalds have replaced it in their chicken wraps with some dark green leafy vegetable which is absolutely horrible. I methodically remove every trace of this from my wrap before eating it, whereas the lettuce version was fine.

The Coronation Chicken sandwiches that I sometimes get from Aldi likewise now have leaves of some sort in them. Can it really be that lettuce has become far more scarce and expensive, presumably because of the pandemic, or is there some other reason maybe?

Oh I wouldn't miss lettuce personally.

If I buy a prepacked samwich it's usually got nothing on it barring a slice of ham. It's actually really hard to buy a samwich that isn't smothered in mayonnaise. I mean FFS.

Back on track: my daughter has just informed me that this dark green leafy stuff is rocket.

Rocket, eh? I've looked it up, and it appears to be highly nutritious, but it's still bloody awful to eat.

It’s gotten ridiculously expensive here so maybe they are cutting costs.
I’m not sure why it is expensive. It’s not that hard to grow.Maybe weather related?

I'm in the states, so maybe this is irrelevant where you live... but over the last few years we've had several lettuce recalls. I think listeria was the problem, but I'm not sure. I think quite a few places (here anyway) decided to say to hell with lettuce because of that and stick with something similar that wasn't getting recalled every few months. Less potential law suits plus more health benefits in the alternatives seemed a win win to them.

Yeah that's why I don't like it. It cuts a road right through me.

My favourite lettuce is crunchy crispy Iceberg. I suppose Cos is alright.

The rest of the types of lettuce I can give or take. But I do like crunching my way through green leafy veg, I am a reincarnated rabbit.

You can grow leaf lettuce in a flower pot or window box.
It’s easy.Plant every few week for continuous harvest.
You can gets all sorts of colors and textures. Some have funny names, like Drunken Woman Frizzy Headed, Tom Thumb or Deer Tongue.

I grew some peas in a corner of my parents' garden in the roasting hot summer of 1976. They tasted very nice as well!

That was the summer where the road melted
