Back in the early 1980s a friend of the family was saying how he was cycling home one evening when a little girl in victorian clothing walked infront of him.

This caused him to crash of his bike and when he got back up to his feet she vanished.

Do you think that was most likely a ghost/spirit he encountered or not?

Could have been, you don't see too many Victorian girls these days

There are no ghosts. He's probably a bad cyclist and had to make up some kind of excuse.

Not.

A “ghost story”, yes; but a story about a real ghost?

Definitely NOT!

It was either the truth...

or

it was a BIG lie!

If you tell your boss that you were late because there was a traffic jam on the Washington DC Beltway he wont believe you.

But if you tell him that you got into a fight with the ...supernatural talking zombie mongoose animal that lives between the walls of your house then he will have no choice but to believe you...because no one would have the chutzpah to make up something that asinine!

Works for me! :D

I saw a ghost and I don't care what anyone says to the contrary.

Who knows, Jamesy.

My daughter and her friend claim they saw one here.A heavyset lady dressed old fashioned and you could see thru her.
They never told anyone till years later because who would believe them?
This is is an old home place and a former occupant died suddenly right at the old cellar door.It was a hand dug well with walls around it packed with sawdust, not an in the ground cellar. The creeks were up and they had to lay her out on a door, she was a heavy woman.Known for her cakes and pies.An Army type vehicle had to ford the river ( three crossings)and get her to the cemetery before she composted. She was young and left a husband with children.

I suspect that alcohol was involved, either in the alleged "ghost" sighting, or in the telling of the story -- maybe both.

He cycled back from visiting his girlfriend in the 1970s. The ghost he saw was on the same road a girl was killed by a car on years before.

They had cars in Victorian England?

I so badly want to see a ghost, and I don't mean on the TV, but in real life. Graveyards are too clichéd, I've been to graveyards at night and I've never seen a ghost. Plus graveyards are peaceful, pretty places and don't feel haunted at all.

The best places to find ghosts are at old abandoned buildings. But in this stupid country every
abandoned place seems to be law-protected and you get arrested just for exploring, which is off-putting. (Yes, it's my body, I'm willing to take the risk of hurting myself, I just so badly want adventure).

There are many possibilities:

- He could be making the story up (very likely).
- It could be related to alcohol or drugs (also very likely).
- It could be a hallucination.
- It could be a waking dream caused by a sleep issue/sleep disorder.
- It could be a figment of his imagination.
- He could’ve mistaken something for something else and then is exaggerating what he thinks he saw.
- There could be a medical reason - like a seizure.

The most unlikely possibility is that it was a ghost. I’ve never seen compelling evidence that they exist.

Or so he says.  He may be just taking the piss with you.

The Victorian Era lasted from 1837 to 1901.  The first motorcars in England were sold sometime in the mid-1890s.  This is roughly a 5-year overlap in the two eras.  The alleged incident -- if it actually happened -- occurred during the time 1896 to 1901.  I find no mention of any such incident occurring during that time.  Perhaps your friend could be more precise when relating the time and location of the alleged incident.

Just so you know, this reminds me of several urban legends from this side of the Atlantic -- "The Bloody Hook", "The Violet Corsage", and "The Drowned Hitch-Hiker" spring to mind -- none of which have any fixed location or date, but each one has one thing in common . . . "A friend told me".  Maybe it was a friend, a friend of a friend, or someone's cousin's hairdresser's best friend; in any case, tracing the alleged "ghost sighting" back to an actual event is virtually impossible.

Your friend's "ghost story" was most likely mere pub talk, and nothing more.

When I want adventure, I go for long hikes in the woods, go somewhere I’ve never been before, try something I’ve never done before, or live vicariously through witnessing the adventures/experiences of characters in a good book.
