So I had a job interview for a job I really want but the interview was a disaster, I just froze and didn't really answer the questions as I had practised and wanted to. They seem like a progressive and inclusive modern employer would it be a good idea to email them and explain I have high functioning autism and that was the reason for my calamity at the interview stage?

There's no harm I doing that. I mean if you think you've fudged it anyway then you have very little to lose.

Maybe mention that the interview was not representative of how you are at work.

Do all of the above

The bad: Don't count on it working

The good: There is a shortage of employees so another opportunity is likely to come.

interviews are so difficult for so many reasons.

another option is you could follow up as a thank you for the interview, and then include something akin to "i enjoyed learning about __________ and i feel my high-functioning autism could contribute nicely to ______________ and _____________ (part of the job that appeals to you and the reasons why you applied) which shows highlights of your interview and also allows a disclosure.

Yes, in this case it's likely more true than normal. Few people worth hiring don't have that gap, but for us it tends to be a much larger gap than the interviewer probably expects.

These kinds of situations are the price of developing confidence. Well, so long as you bounce back in some real sense.
