Do you care about you're national day?
Is it something you celebrate?
What is it that makes people care so much about such a da?

Today we have the Swedish national day.
We do not really care much about it here.
I guess some of us sing the national anthem but most people do not even care about that.
I don't see the importance of having a day on which you celebrate that you are Swedish.

I know that many countries actually care about such a day. It seems a bit strange to me.

I fail to comprehend why people are proud of their country & town/city just because they were born & raised there

I comprehend it even though I don’t always agree with it.

People like to feel a sense of pride in where they’re from, what their people have accomplished. It’s been that way forever.

A lot of countries have achieved a lot in their histories, so there’s a lot for people to be proud of despite whatever flaws their countries have.

Besides that, it’s good for marketing to your own citizens.. getting their buy in to support the government of the day, maintain stability etc. Its good business practice for governments to sell this stuff to citizens and have them eat it up.

I'm also in England, but no-one seems to pay much attention to St George's Day. St Patrick's day, on the other hand....

Maybe if there was parades and a tradition of drinking red beer St. George's day would be as popular as Paddy's.

That may be why I don't get it. I don't care what my ancestors & what my extended family members I never met have accomplished. I care about my own accomplishments & the accomplishments of people I'm close to & care about it, like I'll be supportive if they take pride in their families, jobs, volunteer work or whatever. I didn't have any choice about being born & raised in the US & I have little choice about living in the US as an adult. If I could chose what country I was born & raised, I'd pick a different country like Canada, Australia, Sweden, or Denmark. I never felt any pride about living in Louisiana but I guess I feel a little about living in Vermont partly because I had a bit of choice about moving here & the attitude & political atmosphere is a hell of a lot nicer & more respectful which is why I wanted to move here to be with Cass instead of having her move down to Louisiana to be with me.

People love having an excuse to party.

I care more about Germany Reunification Day than I do Canada Day. It's pretty hard to feel proud when you have a knucklehead for a prime minister.

They did have a St George's Day parade in my town one year, but it didn't catch on. Doesn't help that people tend to associate the St George Cross with skinhead thugs. You see that flag flying, you carefully walk the other way in case they start something.

That seems odd to me. Mardi Gras is very popular where I'm originally from. People need to have a month or partying in order to abstain from any praying for a month due to the religious reasons of Lent. I never heard of Mardi Gras ever being associated with skinheads or white supremacy thou despite that more than a few Christians who observe Lent fall in that range.

But Steven Harper's been out of office for years. :nerdy:

That makes sense. I can see it being a nationalist circle jerk that mostly appeals to those sorts.

its a remnant of ape evolution and it was logical at the time.

tribalism: its healthy and beneficial to be a part of your own tribe. But after the development of agriculture and nations its not as relevant, systems are meant to interconnect to 150 other systems, it gets exponentially more difficult after that. when the population is 100 million it is not nearly as relevant. when the population is world they are often just competition. Although generally, people all over the world are helpful, but can be financially competition. Without UBI this can become an adversity.

He makes a ominous appearance from time to time.
