Hmm. I asked myself how I used to find people to talk to back in the early aughts, and I remembered that good and proper message boards existed back then. Sadly, the ones I used to haunt don't really exist anymore (or, they do, but they are complete ghost towns), and the internet has evolved into content creation/like-farming rather than actual connection-making... so... this place seems to be the closest to what I used to be comfortable with.

Hello.

My name is Beckett. 39 years old, nonbinary. Loves cats, coffee and music (industrial, post-industrial, new wave, futurepop, etc etc). Spent the last 15 years hardcore invested into building myself professionally, as well as investing heavily in my relationship with my partner. Spun out of my job of six years due to burnout, then lost my partner to a random-assed stroke. Got my diagnosis a few months after all this exploded. Just now getting some energy back to try and recover some kind of life. We'll see how it rolls.

That's about it, I reckon.

What kind of music has everyone been jamming to this week? Hit me with some links ~

ETA: This isn't rolling well so far. Two posts and I'm restricted from posting anymore? How do people engage in conversation here, then? Seems kinda... hostile, honestly.

Welcome to WP! I hope you find at least some of what you are looking for here.

Music? Mostly I listen to Steve Roach though I've also discovered that anyone he has collaborated with also has good music. And, Philip Glass is also good, I am especially fond of the Qatsi trilogy and the similar Ron Fricke films.

I like dramatic classical music but do not listen to it much...I can't ignore it in the background, I always want to focus my attention on it.

The group we've gone to the most live performances of is Blue Man Group.

You're restricted from posting?

Did you get that fixed? (I realise you can't answer ... duh ...)

Welcome anyway - That's not normal and I'll get someone to look into it if I don't see you around again.

Yay cats! I have five.

(I'm pretty sure there's a wait period before you can post music, but it's not very long.)

Welcome to WP!

Old school forums are indeed good for connection making versus 'like-farming' social media websites, as you describe.

Likely related to your trying to post a Spotify link? (I see you've added it to your signature).
It's a simple anti-spamming measure - including links in posts is not permitted until 6+ posts have been made.

Ahhhhhhh... testing now to see if it's link related. If it is I'll remove it until I meet the magic number. I also wonder if it was me trying to post a video in the "what are you listening to right now" thread... I tried multiple times until I finally got a screen that said I can't post links. *flail*
Like, I get it... but... big ouch since music is my big yen and has always been how I like to meet people :(

ETA: YAY IT POSTS.

Side note of ETA: Thanks for the welcome everybody. Double-thanks for the Flandersposting

Seems to be working now! Woot! I only have two cats right now and they're plenty to keep up with, haha. But if I had the energy for more, I would for sure have a full cat-fam. I'll definitely wind up posting them at some point :)

It seems like you are making progress on becoming a full member of this site. You are up to 25 posts at the moment. About your partner. You said your partner suffered a stroke. So did I; 2.5 years ago. I lost my ability to read and also I lost all my words. It is really hard to communicate without your words. At the time of the stroke, my heart stopped beating for around 5 minutes (I died) and then there was a spark and it began to beat again. But by that time the damage was already done. I have been able to get back most of the damage but not all. I am a work in progress. If your friend is unable to talk and if he is still alive, understand that he is still there. He is trying and trying and trying to come back.

If only. He died within an hour of paramedics arriving. The kind of stroke he had has a 30% survival rate... 10% actual recovery rate. Brains are weird. It's all one squishy mass, but I reckon "location is everything", as they say. Glad you're getting to fight back for your life.

I’ve suffered two cerebellar strokes. I lost my speech on the first one like jimmy.

I’m so sorry about your partner.

Thanks. It is a very complex subject. I suffered 4 regions of damage. The first was in my brain (lost my knowledge of words). The second was in the back of my skull. I lost right side vision. The third was inside my eyes, the third layer down which is all liquid. It turned into a jell. The fourth was on the surface of my eyes. It felt like slivers of glass on my eyes when I tried to look. It was very painful. But I am making progress. One of the important things to understand, is that recovery from a stroke does not end within the first 6 months. It is not time limited.
