Non-autistics are more obsessed, and force them onto others
There was this news on the radio some weeks ago where, despite there being a case of a nurse killing babies being sentenced, and separately a coup... still, their damn boringly stupid sports came first... first in the schedule of a non-sport (primarily) news... and, apparently, the SAME DAMN SHOUTING needed to be broadcast not just once... but five times in total. Who the hell ever says it is people on the spectrum who obsess and, also, force their interests onto others?! These apparently neurotypical, although clearly mentally ill, people practically hijacked national radio (and likely tv) to not only broadcast their obsession, but force it onto others... while ignoring a nurse killing babies and a coup! What bizarre, annoying s h i t!
I never got the point of sports! They're so predictable, loud and just utterly pointless I can't get invested. The only time I have ever been invested in sports is Ted Lasso, because I felt for the characters and understood what the heck was going on. And yet I have the empathy problem and the social disorder. Because I don't want to sit in a crowd and cheer at NOTHING, for people I have been given no logical reason to care for, like I just can't.
And just salt on the wound, something that should probably have been breaking news (though the bar is pretty high these days; some crazy new sh*t happens every week), is delayed so people can get angry over a ball being kicked the wrong way by some jerks named after random animals or cultural appropriated people.

Completely Agree. It's like every NT has a special interest that they just can't stop talking about. Football, Soccer, Rugby, Tennis, Women's Football, Kids Football, Disabled Football, Dog Football. STFU will you!
Every newspaper has to have a sports section, every TV news report has to have a sports piece, usually presented by someone with the IQ of a carrot.
And if it's not Sports it'll be some vapid celebrity s**t. They're mad as hatters the lot of them.
Edit: Does talking about the weather count as a special interest?

I have also never understood the appeal of sports. I was into it a bit as a kid but as soon as I became a teenager I started feeling embarrassed to scream at a television at people who didn't know I was watching them personally, and whom I know would only consider me as something abstract in their minds, i.e, a faceless 'football fan'.
The sports folk who play football are mostly overpaid also, particularly in the better leagues. It is actually disgusting how much some of them get paid.

They note Autistics have "special interests" but I assert that NTs do, too. It's just that they like to be with the herd so their special interests have to be accepted by the herd. Sport is on their approved list of special interests. (Ditto following celebrities.)

The weather is just a go to topic for small talk.
If you were to respond to NT small talk about the weather by going into an in depth monolog about meteorology then you would be driving the person away with your "special interest".
Oddly enough, in this day and age, the weather is starting to not work as small talk. The weather used to be non controversial because it had nothing to do politics, philosophy, or religion (the heavy stuff you're supposed to skirt around in polite conversation).
But because of global warming even the weather is becoming politized and polarizing nowadays.

Why scream at the TV? I don't think I ever get that worked-up watching hockey, ball hockey or racing, but I definitely enjoy watching them.

P1: Whoa man, it's a hot one today.
P2: Don't start with that global warming nonsense.
P1: I just said it's hot, it's 36°C and we don't get that warm very awesome.
P2: Watch me wear this parka to own the libs.

I like watching certain sports, well quite a lot of sports, but I'm more interested in the actual people in it. I mean not the technical side or the scores, but what the people do and their interactions. I hope that makes sense?

I tended to watch it in groups, and sometimes with people who were under the effect of alcohol.
British people and Europeans in general are a lot more passionate when watching sports than Americans in terms of emotions, as a generality.
People become unhinged, even watching the television/not at the stadium. An example of those celebrations below:

I'm from a country where people riot over hockey. Are you sure Europeans are more passionate?

There's lots of that kind of stuff going on with football in particular here in the UK. People end up in hospital after fan fights break out outside and around stadiums.
I realise comparing different countries in terms of passion in such a way isn't a science.
I should have said "in my opinion."

I think it's largely just a matter of which game gets us the most riled up.
Canadians it's hockey, Yanks it's football, basketball and baseball, Brits it's association football.
I don't think other sports attract organized squads of ultras, but that doesn't mean there won't be unorganized violence.

One time I was in this volunteering group and in the break room all they talked about was football! It was so boring!
The type with the oval shaped field I presume?

I never got into sports. My stepfather used to get angry at me for not caring whether his football team won or lost. When they lost, it was absolutely devastating to him. I said he could go to nearly anyone else in our society for sympathy, as almost all of them seem to be into sports. Also, when I had my first job as a teen and I didn't get along with my co-workers, he suggested I fake an interest in sports in order to win them over. Which I absolutely was not going to do.
It's always bizarre to me that some people consider my special interests like cartoons or theme parks unacceptable for adults because we're supposed to grow out of "childish" things; however, it's totally socially acceptable to be obsessed with the same sports team you were obsessed with as a child and you don't ever have to grow out of it.
However, ironically, one of my obsessions is drawing muscular superpowered characters and I like drawing them in sports uniforms sometimes. One of them is even obsessed with sports as his main character trait. I wrote a short story with him and my artist character, who is more similar to me, trying to get along despite having such different interests.
Also, while I'm indifferent to sports, I HATE the news. I appreciate that some people would rather talk about sports than the latest "more important" depressing news story, because I, too, would rather talk about my interests than the news most of the time.
