Vancouver is dying just like the rest of the cities in North America. I was thrown in for a loop when I found out that San Francisco was dying. I had my heart set on hippie watching and bringing one back to Canada with me.
There's a copaganda video called "Vancouver is dying," or something like that that bullshits the crime, drug, and violence problems and makes them sound worse than they really are. They exist, but Vancouver isn't dying.. just changing. There's a Facebook group called "Vancouver is Falling," that's all about the insane costs of real estate.
But if you take a look at the skyline, Vancouver is in fact transforming.. tons of new high rises and entire communities popping up - places like Oakridge centre. Pretty impressive even if almost no one that works for a living here can afford a condo there. ($2-5M) It's still pretty impressive that they're adding like 10 new buildings in that one redevelopment alone. Plus the design is actually pretty good looking. That architect has a reputation for changing cities with large impressive new developments like that.
San Francisco is now a "Tech Bro," city for geeks with extremely high salaries. Whereas LA got expensive and hippies and artists left, and now there's so many vacancies there that over the last handful of years artists are moving back to LA because it's gotten cheaper again to rent spaces in old buildings no one is occupying.
We still have hippies right here in Vancouver, though. They're still around Kitsilano and the West End and hanging out at Wreck Beach - I know because I'm there all the time.
