Some people have thought that you can spank the autism out of kids and electric shock the homosexuality out of people. What do you think about this?

Oh yeah. I used to get whooped for stimming and ticcing. It made me just start staying in my room, and then they griped at me for not socializing. Do they really think I want to be around them with that crap?

It might possibly teach some kids to mask some & avoid showing/expressing certain traits but it mostly teaches kids to fear & resent authority. This reminds me of being bullied & punished at school for talking about certain things or saying weird things or saying them the wrong way & making noises & talking to myself while stimming. I started keeping to myself more & pushed myself to be quieter & started stimming with my hands more by playing with pens/pencils & paperclips & such.

This is a d@mmed if you do & d@mmed if you don't situation. With those I tend to take the easiest approach or the one that will avoid some confrontation. I was never beat up by authority but I was punished & fussed at a bit for being inappropriate when I did try & socialize & mom gripped about how I spent too much time in my room & didn't talk to people at family social things. It's easier & less problematic to keep to myself than having a major argument & getting in trouble for being mean/rude/offensive. It's one factor for why I'm a bit of a misanthrope.

I'd like to see those therapists and parents shocked and spanked and see how they like it.

I think lots of those parents were spanked when they were kids but instead of learning to empathize/sympathize with their own kids not being in line, those parents raise their kids the way they were raised since that's what they learned. It's like how military commanders are very strict on their subordinates & when the subordinates rise in ranks & become commanders they are also strict since that's what they were taught.

Unconscious incompetence

They are being "true to themselves " and they are "doing their best "

As a result of that, as well as many other things, I hate it what someone has the name to say "do your best".

Your "best" depends on plenty of factors, some of which you cannot control or measure. Some of the factors are changing constantly. It is not physically possible to measure "your best". (Heisenberg uncertainty principle). Anything could be anyone's "best".

Just because someone (correctly or wrongly) said that they did their "best" , does not absolve them from the moral responsibility of their actions

Some people also think you can cure autism with bleach enemas or heavily salted cabbage juice, so why should I be surprised that they would be stupid enough to think spanking or shocks would work as well?

It sounds like slapping is the way to fix the TV, the last attempt before throwing it away.

It would be funny to see someone try to cattle prod a TV set.

In my case, both parents, who are now deceased, came from broken, abusive homes. Mom’s home life was the worst. Her father and grandfather were the town drunks. Even worse, they owned and ran a speakeasy. Further, her father saw action in WWII. She was abused physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially. Even after she married Dad, the abuse continued, whenever we went to visit. He was born on Christmas Eve, so by the time my family came to visit that evening, he was drunk and acting stupid, so much so that after I graduated college, I went John Woo on his ass, and stormed out of his house, never to return, as I was declared persona non grata.

As for Dad, his father was humping another woman on the side, and eventually left his wife, to raise him and his five siblings. In addition, while I’m not nqualified to diagnose anyone, Grandpa was a narcissist, and Dad was more than likely the scapegoat. Considering that he, and his siblings were raised on a farm, and his mother was deeply religious(sic), the rule for discipline was “spare the rod, spoil the child.” That eventually rubbed off on Mom, who had an even shorter fuse than dad. Dad’s idea of a good time was to make a jackass out of me in public, which he did many times, right up to his dying day.

And people wonder why I keep to myself, and never married?
