Do You Hide Your Special Interest?

As I have mentioned before, a lot of people make fun of me for liking Looney Tunes and say it's for babies, and usually I'm made fun of for being in love with a specific character, who literally has a job, Canon wife and a gun. One notable comment was someone saying some nasty things about me for liking the 1944 Short The Stupid Cupid due to it featuring Elmer clad in nothing but a hat and a diaper. It's hard for me to ignore them.

Yeah, ND people tend to not understand special interests, and it's irritating to turn down our enthusiasm for the things we love just because it's not "socially acceptable."
People also make fun of me for my nerdy interests in sci-fi, referencing everything I see and having an obsession with serial killers. They say I look like a school shooter/serial killer/psychopath and act weird and antisocial. I don't mind it as much as other stuff, but it's annoying considering I actually know the DSM-5 for sociopaths, and I know I'm not one.

Anyway, it's kind of a longwinded way of saying it, but I think you know what you are and if you're confident in yourself, then people's stupid assumptions won't mean anything. Keep loving Elmer Fudd

I am 54 and I adore Looney Tunes, I often attach LT and other cartoons on my FB profile. Don't care what people will think. But I would say that many adult people like them, too. They are funny and are great reminder of your childhood. In my country we have had great actors who gave their voices for synchronization. Some dialogs became eternal and part of internal jokes EVERYONE knows and like to use them in various situations.

And no, most of the time I don't hide my special interests.

Loony Tunes is not for babies, the original cartoons were really aimed at adults. Just look at all the hard physical comedy and sometimes raunchy humor that was in them. People thinking all cartoons are only for children are due to "animation age ghetto", which I think can be blamed on when cartoons started airing on TV in the 50s and parents became more and more concerned about what their kids were watching.

When I was a teenager I was bullied a lot for liking Garfield comics and cartoons and because drawing cartoons seemed to be all I cared about. Most teenagers are horrible, they're all hormones and no brains, and all they care about is fitting in, and if someone doesn't fit in, they treat them like scum. But I still didn't hide my interests because it was my only way of coping with a society I never asked to be born in (insert Joker meme here).

no, I have 2 or 3 really preferred interests, and I belong to groups on line, even moderate a forum about them. Finding others to share interests with increases the enjoyment. No shame! I know a lot of adults who like looney tunes... some even have tattoos and posters, collectible figures... all good.

If somebody seems likely to mock your interest, then it's probably wise to keep it hidden from them. It's not a matter of shame. There are things about me that I keep quiet about to many people, but I'm not ashamed of them, I just don't disclose my full identity to bigots. The shame is on them for being judgemental.

I also try not to talk about some of my interests because they'd probably bore most people. They're too detailed and specialised to be of the slightest interest to them.

OTOH, if you're confident enough to not be too averse to risking a bit of ridicule, if you don't particularly need the respect and co-operation of certain others, if their disrespect doesn't get you down, then publish and be "damned." Judgemental people cause a lot of pain, and it can be quite a tonic to get your own back by annoying them.

Hiding them? No. Not monologging about them yes. Getting diagnosed helped me understand that I do that and most people find that off putting.

On WP I can monolog to my hearts content. People have the option of disengaging from me whenever they feel like it unlike in face to face conversations where abruptly leaving is considered insulting.

Not really.

Just selective.
Sometimes I use the special interest itself to be selective.

But otherwise, I don't actively hide it.
Passively show, but not tell.

I don't hide my special interests and nor do I want to. I've got nothing to hide. I never really did hide my special interests. If you can't be yourself, you might as well be dead.

I don't hide my special interests but usually I don't go out of my way to advertise them.

They interest me and, as it turns out, that doesn't mean they interest anyone else.

So, I enjoy my interests but try not to bore other people with them.

And I think that is likely a good general policy regarding harmless interests.

P.S. My bride of more years than you've been alive is also a fan of Looney Tunes. She's ADHD so she's too busy to watch them much, though. I'll note that (1) while she doesn't visit WP often she is a member, (2) while she's a fan of Looney Tunes in general she is especially fond of Bugs. I'm unclear on what she would say about a fan of Elmer...the guy who wants to shoot that wascally wabbit!

I don't hide them per se, but I don't get into many interactions where I can share them apart from family so for the most part I drive my family mad by geeking out on them, luckily I have a loving and patient family who will entertain me a few minutes a week each to get out whatever facts are in my head from a book I've read that day.
