Is 55 considered to be a senior?

Typically it's 65. You've got another decade to go.

60 here and still look young as a recent retiree!

I've got the mind of a 21 year old Mod and the knees of a 65 year old senior. Does that make me half a senior?

If seniors are 65, then why senior apartments are 55 here in California?

Good question.

We have 55+ apartments here in BC, too, but generally people aren’t considered seniors until 65.

And the longer people live (due to medical advances mostly) and the healthier they are at 55 65 75 then people don’t even seem that old even at those ages and it’s hard to consider them senior citizens.

My mom is 69, technically a senior but she’s not an “old,” person. I have friends in their 50’s-70’s and they don’t act or seem “old,” very often ever. Hell, my great aunt is 91 and one of the youngest old people I know.. she drives a red convertible Mustang and still plans on golfing for at least another 4 years. Youngest old person I know for sure but technically 100% she’s a senior.


Sooo.. 65+ is the general “rule,” but really IMO it depends how healthy and active people are whether they’re “old,” or simply “aged due to time passing.”

At some restaurants, 55+ gets you a senior discount.

Other places say 60+ or 65+.

I agree with other people in the thread who have marked 65 as the senior goal post.

55 is still young imo

It's just a euphemism for "old," not that I think old people are necessarily inferior overall, but society has a bit of a prejudice about anything old, which is why advertisers use the word "new" so much.

Anyway, just as "old" is a bit of a vague term, so is "senior." It would be easier if those who use the terms just gave the actual age in years. Until they do, it's going to be a bit different for different establishments. There is (or used to be) a service in the UK called "50 plus." That was a good, specific name.
