If you swear to God and it's a lie, do you go to Hell?

Is it true that if you swear something to God and it's not true that you automatically go to Hell no matter what? I have heard people say that this is the case.

I'm even more convinced that there is no hell than I'm convinced that there's no heaven, and that's saying something, so naturally my strong opinion is that you wouldn't go to hell. Even among the various theological traditions, few if any would answer yes to your question, and AFAIK there's nothing in scripture to support the idea either, in fact generally speaking the religionists think that as long as you apologised humbly and sincerely to the deity you'd be forgiven. Where did you get your idea from?

Well, I don't really believe in God, or hell, or things being true or false, or what unspecified people say about those things being true or false, so I'm going to say...maybe.

I'm not a theologist, but I'm pretty sure God doesn't have a 1-strike-youre-out policy on damnation.

Hell, there's examples in the Bible of people lying to God Himself, and I bet there's not many people who would argue that eg: Sarah should be in Hell for lying about laughing at God's statement that she would bear a child in her old age.

Christians venerate people who did any number of morally-questionable things in the Bible. God's not going to trap you in the eternal burning torture dimension for using His name to help sell one fib.

I swore a lie on someone's life once

I was on drugs at the time so I get mitigating circumstances

Yes that sounds worse than swearing to God with a lie.

How do they know? Only way to find out is to have some balls and try and see what happens. After all, like the movie says: "Hell is for heroes."

Let's hope the verdict isn't and eye for and eye then.

Jesus Himself said, "Again, you have heard that it was said to the ancients, 'Do not break your oath, but fulfill your vows to the Lord'.  But I tell you not to swear at all: either by Heaven, for it is God’s throne; or by the Earth, for it is His footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.  Nor should you swear by your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black.  Simply let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’  Anything more comes from the evil one." -- Matthew 5:33-37 (NIV)

I swear AT God. I don’t believe in him, but I want to have my bases covered just in case.

Oh, I thought the OP meant swearing to God as in saying "I promise to do x, God." Still, same applies, I don't think it makes any difference to what happens after you die.

There's no such thing as hell or god, but if there was, I doubt that god would be so petty.
