Hello. My name is Vic George. I am 55 years old, and I have been diagnosed with autism in my adult years. For years I have lived with a developmental disorder that had no name to it, but I was originally diagnosed with childhood schizophrenia. I didn't learn of my autism diagnosis until a few years ago. I am into video games and books and Smurfs and the Bible.

Welcome to Wrong Planet.

You wrote that you were originally diagnosed with childhood schizophrenia but now diagnosed with autism. That is rather interesting. I suspect there is a very think linkage between schizophrenia and the condition called asperger's syndrome (or Aspie for short).

There was a member on this site that was an Aspie and his older brother had schizophrenia.

I may be wrong but I suspect that your condition is more likely that of an Aspie.

Welcome to WP! I hope you like it here.

And I was also late-diagnosed. (In my case, age 64!) I was old enough that the diagnosis wasn't foretelling difficulties ahead for me but rather explaining the difficulties I'd already gotten past. It explained so much I was delighted to finally get an explanation for how life had been for me.

And, I'm not too surprised about the confusion around your diagnosis.|
- I was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Level 1 (Mild) in 2019,
+=with a note I also satisfied criteria previously associated with Asperger's Syndrome.
+=But that diagnosis only became possible after DSM-5 introduced it in 2013,
+=before which...|
- I would have been diagnosed as having Asperger's Syndrome
+=because my symptoms were not strong enough to be diagnosed as Autism
+=(which was not yet listed as a Spectrum disorder).
+=But an Asperger's Syndrome diagnosis only became possible after DSM-IV introduced it in 1994,
+=before which...|
- I was just "weird" because DSM-III did not include Asperger's Syndrome
+=and my symptoms were not strong enough to qualify as Autism, a diagnosis it introduced in 1968,
+=before which...|
- "...only the category of childhood schizophrenic reaction was available to describe individuals with early childhood onset of severe disturbances in development of the type referred to by Kanner in his 1943 report."

The way they've been going, I wonder what new diagnoses we will be a candidate for in the future!

That was suggested by one of my previous therapists, that I may have Asperger's.

Welcome to the Wrong Planet, and congratulations on your diagnosis! I'm sure that was validating to receive after so many years of not knowing answers.

I hope you find a spot here, and enjoy your time scrolling! ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ

Welcome! I'm just a year younger than you. Confirmed as being on the spectrum 12 years ago.

Hi, my name is Laura. I'm 47 and was just diagnosed. The diagnosis came about after being attacked at work and my mental health diagnoses of panic disorder, depression and suicidal ideation didn't seem to explain things and the meds were only a little helpful. Now I'm in a position of having to learn who I am. I've been heavily masking and feel like I've lost myself along the way. Glad to find this forum :) .
