Would you ever consider donating a kidney to someone in need

Or have you donated a kidney or anything else

This is something I'm interested in doing in my life so was wondering if anyone has any experience in this area

I'd give a kidney to a family member, or someone I know and care about. I don't know if I'd give one to a stranger. If I die then anyone can have whatever they want, I'm not bothered.

I've given blood a few times. You get a biscuit after so that's nice. They don't want my blood no more though, so no biscuit for me.

Yeah I've got my first blood donation appointment coming up in September so I hope my blood is good enough

I've never had any operations in my life but I reckon I would definitely be prepared to donate a kidney to a loved one and if I didn't have loved ones then I would defo give to a stranger. I like the thought of being able to help out in this way if I can

I'm the same. When I'm dead they can take what they want. I'm all for it

Not sure yet if I'm doing it for selfish reasons or altruistic reasons but I don't even suppose that matters if the end result for a person in need is the same

Yeah I worry about the giving a kidney to a stranger thing. I wonder whether I'd be doing it because I am a good person or because I'm trying to prove to people that I'm a good person.

Yeah I think if I did it then I would have to stay quiet about it or else it looks like I've done it to try and prove something

I mean it's a major operation at the end of the day so I think in reality there are so many other things I could do to try and fool people into thinking I'm some kind of paragon of virtue

I would be willing to donate for someone I majorly love & after I die I would be willing to donate my entire body to whoever can use it. However I have some various health issues & am on lots of meds so I would not be allowed to donate. I would have to be off at least one of the meds for a couple years before I'd be allowed to donate blood. I never donated blood though even before the meds because it's sometimes hard to find my veins for blood tests & I sometimes get poked in a couple spots. My mom always had issues with that as well.

My daughter has an autoimmune disorder which attacks her kidneys. She might need a transplant or dialysis if her condition deteriorates. My own kidneys aren't great either. I've had surgery on one and I have massive cyst on the other (about 20 cm). I doubt I would even be a candidate to donate to my daughter, but of course I would if I were able. No I wouldn't donate to a stranger because as altruistic as the idea sounds, I'm keeping mine in case she needs them. I don't think many people understand the gravity of major surgery like that.

When I'm gone sure, take whatever you want. I've been signing my organ donor card for about 40 years since I started driving. I used to donate blood all the time too, but I'm now disqualified from that for medical reasons. I need to dump blood regularly but it can't be given to others.

There are much better and more effective ways to be of service than to undergo a massive operation. And you can help a lot more people than just one. (This refers to donating to a stranger.)

Is that a typo? 20 cm is bigger than the kidney itself.

It wraps around it.

Yes, that's something else I wondered about. Whether it's related to low self-esteem. If I'd like to be useful to people but don't really believe I've got anything valuable to offer except the literal meat I'm made of.

My mum has stage 3 kidney failure so if she needs a transplant in the future, she can have one of mine. Mine are healthy.

I signed up years ago to be a bone marrow donor and I'm on the world register. I had to give them my email address, regular address and phone number so I can be contacted at any time.

Thank you. :)

There's an age limit I think for donating bone marrow. I get an email once a year with people's stories about donating. It's really inspiring.

I'm not sure I'm healthy enough to try.
Not as a possible eligible donor, but handling the entire processes itself.

Even if I'm, maybe not.

Not until one could solve my cravings with salty food and my overall diet; yes, I'm thinking more about of lifestyle changes after donation, not just recovery.

If I can afford to make that huge change, I'd be more incline to 'maybe'.

Otherwise, I just don't like the major lifestyle changes, dietary and activity restrictions; "not mature enough" to 'be a bigger person'.

I could think of others, if only I can ignore myself. Preferably permanently.

Already having lifestyle issues without apparent health issues myself at this current lifetime.

Currently inclined to say 'no'.

Unless my intent is sheer challenge (likely if I'm very healthy and already in a good place), shortening my lifespan, or if I really 'care' through lapse of judgment and convince myself that the consequences for this 'selfless act' and major changes won't impact my quality of life.

Or if I'm already truly, clinically, past the threshold and chance of survival dead.
I don't care what happens to this body when I'm able to leave it for good.
