Maybe someone can help me understand this behaviour. I have had it in various forms for my entire life.

It starts out with some task that I must do on a regular basis (go to school, take a shower, go to work, etc.)
Usually this thing is not hard, but just annoying. Like I would rather not.
And at first, I can dutifully make myself do it, for years... but eventually it's like a buildup of pressure and I just simply cannot force myself to do it. I will find anything to distract myself.

I had some paperwork to do just now. It should have taken maybe 15 minutes. But instead it took me 4 hours today because I. Just. Can't. Do. It.

It could be...

An unsolved mental health issue or some hidden emotional hung up you've been ignoring for years.

Your drainer is actually task switching and you're constantly feeling inertia than momentum every time you transition to a different task.

Understimulation or overstimulation of something.
Either you take a break over everything or/and do something new, away from your usual environment and activities.

Chronic stress and whatever lifestyle you have does not make up for your energy loss/rest and recover ratio.
And powering through doesn't work anymore.

And unknown health condition. Maybe check your bloodwork to be sure.

I don't know.
The same happened to me when I started my first job.

Really active and efficient at first, only to dwindle and progressively become worse, not being able to 'adjust'.
And becoming more maladaptive and even worse than simply getting complacent instead of adapting and getting accustomed.

Maybe earlier than that and I was just accustomed to the feeling of fatigue, the usual background irritation and annoyance of chronic stress, yet always remembered the contrast of what being fully rested feels like -- knowing better that whatever I've been feeling most at the time is not healthy.

Maybe you're masking constantly and not know it.

Maybe you're aging. Unless this happened to you even before puberty.

Maybe that activity level is making you burn both ends of your candle despite looking easy or relaxing.

Thanks, I think you're spot on with the possibility of stress/fatigue. I actually have been sleeping poorly lately which is a big factor.
