The Democratic convention's surprise guest: Covid

Quote:
They came hoping for Beyoncé. They left with Covid.

Fresh off of a jam-packed week of Democratic National Convention events, reports of attendees’ testing positive for Covid are rolling in.

They include members of Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign staff, who are now contending with sickness from Covid, according to two sources close to the campaign with knowledge of the cases. There is at least some concern the developments could affect staffing at events this week, they added.

One of the sources said that so far, the aides' symptoms they’ve heard about have been mild, and a third person close to the campaign said there was no concern about staffing the events.

Since the convention wrapped up Thursday, various attendees and reporters have posted photos of positive Covid results.

“You put 20,000 people in an 18,000-person building, it’s bound to happen,” said Jaimey Sexton, a Chicago political consultant who attended the convention and was involved in multiple related events. Sexton said he knew of people who now have Covid from the convention and has heard of even more anecdotally. “You could ask anybody who was planning an event, they know somebody who has Covid,” he said.

The convention had overflow crowds at the United Center each day, particularly Thursday, the night Harris delivered her acceptance remarks. Before 8 p.m. that evening, organizers announced the venue would be closed off because it was at capacity.

Experts have detected a rise in cases this summer and even warned of one of the most severe summer waves yet, mirroring a worldwide surge in infections.

It is interesting to note that no exact numbers have been reported, only "various attendees and reporters".

I find it puzzling that the DNC was a super spreader and the RNC was not. I guess COVID only attacks Democrats.

Fortunately, COVID is no longer deadly in the way that it was in the beginning, so a superspreader event now is more of an inconvenience than a widespread tragedy.

Whoops.

Pretending there is no superspreader event fits into the messaging for both parties for different reasons.

Then democrats messaging is that we are the responsible ones not the lunatic MAGA anti vaxxers. With our mitigation measures we beat COVID, got the economy rolling. An acknowledgement that crowds packed into an indoor spaces still are superspreader events is an inconvenient truth.

The Republican messaging is that COVID is a super hyped event used to control every part of your life by Communist Democrats. My guess is that the Republican Convention was a superspreader event they managed to cover up. If they acknowledge a superspreader event then COVID is not hype and thus the deep state will use it as an excuse to put in all sorts of authoritarian measures.

The ironic part is that it was Trump not Biden that got the vaccines out in record time due to Operation Warp Speed. Trump can’t acknowledge that because his base is anti-vaxx.

Long Covid is, indeed, quite an inconvenience...

But odds are high that one will survive it with only minor permanent neurological and circulatory damage.

How is your Long Covid coming along?

Most days I'm at about 75% and can walk kind of okay as long as I pace myself and spend the next day resting.
Today is not one of those days :)

The other thing the DNC was spreading was democracy. Which can hardly be said for the other lot.

I still have not seen any real-life data that would even imply that the Democratic Convention was a COVID superspreader event.

And you are never going to get it as reporting positive tests is not mandatory.
