I've been watching videos lately of retro game collectors and resellers
Complete n64 games go for a good bit of money, even some playstation 2 games go for quite a bit if rare and good condition.
My vintage collection is long gone (thx MOM!)
But it does make me wonder, if I started collecting modern gen console games today. Would i consider them a good investment in 20 years time?
I wouldn't keep them sealed, as I'd play the games. But hopefully if I take good care of the cases and manuals. Some of them might retain their retail value.

Considering that digital only media seems to be the future of video game consoles and in some respects, is already here, phyiscal media might indeed be worth a bit in the future, especially for the adults of the future who want to make nostalgia purchases from their teenage years.

I've thought about it but seems a pretty risky investment if those games are easier to get in the future

This was my thought.
It has been many years since I purchased physical media for my PC.

people could just mod the retro console in the future and download games and get a very similar experience to physical games

No.You would most likely be far better off investing in S and P 500 No-Load Index Funds than video games.

I don't know, I don't usually look at it that way, I collect games because I like to play them.
I do try to purchase Dragon Quest games as soon as possible though, because I know once they go out of print, they will NOT be affordable.

I think the best way to invest in video games would most likely buy stock in video game companies. I think these would possibly be sin stocks which means you would possibly have higher returns than the broader market. You could find some video game companies that pay dividends and you could make passive income from video games.

well I guess a old Pac man game could be a collectible that could be worth something but really its bad financial practice to have your retirement in collectibles.I guess the OP could maybe buy stock in Microsoft or Nintendo.I say Microsoft because you would be investing in XBOX and Call of Duty.I know Microsoft shares and maybe Nintendo would give you passive income just for owning the stock through dividends. You could also buy a Sin Stock ETF which would have shares of videogame companies

As the world gets more crowded people have less room to store collectibles.
A problem for retirees these days is that nobody wants their stuff as they downsize into small living spaces.

That's not true. I want their stuff if their stuff includes a 240/260/280Z or Chevy Vega that's not too rotten.

Nah, they said "modern" video games.
So it's -possible- that a modern release of Ms. Pac-Man could be worth money some day, but not very likely. Usually those arcade collections go straight to the bargain bin.

But I suppose with consoles like the X Xbox X Series X double X XboxXXX, any physical games could potentially be worth money, since Microsoft is trying to phase out physical releases.
