No, I'm weird even for a nerd.

This.

If I said 'what's up nerds' people might assume I'm not including myself under that label and not appreciate my use of the n-slur.

You're smarter than you give yourself credit for, even if black and white thinking and catastrophization undermine it at times.

Maybe some things are in black and white, and the reason I have catastrophic thinking is because the world IS a catastrophe. We've had the worst pandemic since the 1918 flu, Russia is run by a lunatic that could launch the nukes any second now and the USA just re-elected a xenophobic rapist for president.

I don't actually know.
Not my style/aesthetic/identifier/inclination/choice.

 I can definitely pass like one if I tried. Good enough that someone else can call me a nerd.

There's rarely any benefit to assuming the worst-case scenario is going to unfold and panicking over that assumption.

It's maladaptive and only serves to hurt the person who does it. It's little more than choosing to self-harm in front of a captive audience.

Even if there's a genuine catastrophe unfolding in front of someone panicking is just about the worst thing one can do. It's impossible to think rationally when someone allows their emotions to override that ability.

Like, say if there's a pandemic, OMG I should just kill myself isn't a useful way of thinking, especially if one has no intentions of following through on that line of thinking. It ends up just becoming a fantasy to distract themselves from productive responses to the threat. All of the effort that going into fantasizing about highly unlikely worse-case scenarios and suicide could otherwise be invested towards doing something useful.

What benefit does it provide? Near as can be seen all it does is make you more miserable. No one's life has ever been improved by wallowing in their own anxieties and misery.

As for nuclear war, it's a hypothetical possibility but we've been closer to it before than we are now and nothing happened. That doesn't guarantee it won't happen, but it indicates that among the people who make those decisions that cooler heads will most likely continue to prevail. Why? Because no one wants to make that decision.

If the people in charge of the nukes panicked like you we'd all be dead because they would have panicked and used their nukes already.

No. I have nerdy skills and I often use them, but I have an emotional, artistic, vernacular side that I like to take for a romp here and there.

I see myself more like a teachers pet than a nerd because I have always worked very hard on my school/university/professional work, and have always been more interested in that than stereotypical nerdy stuff like Star Trek or dungeons and dragons.
