Has anyone run for public office
Thinking about it for the next civic election which is 10 months away.
Frankly, I don't think my heart is in it, but I have a while to decide.
I'd rather have my tv script sold, but actually thinking about what is more realistic - well..
If I run for city councillor, the field of candidates might be 12, maybe 20 at the most.
So theoretically, I have a 1/20 chance to be elected - though it depends on how well you run your campaign.
As for tv scripts - I don't live in Hollywood and there are 10s of thousands of script writers out there. Probably 100s of thousands. That is almost like a crapshoot, but that has been my passion for a long time. I just haven't seen any meaningful results aside from reaching the quarterfinals in a screenwriting contest and a number of positive reviews.
I ran for city council once simply because the guy we had was so bad and he was running unopposed. I really didn't want the job and was glad I lost. A guy in politics asked me at the time what I thought the job entailed as if I thought it was a trajectory to prominence. I told him I thought the job was like a shop steward where you had to try to solve everyone's complaints. I think he was surprised that I understood what the job would entail.
As far as script writing goes, you might consider getting a job in the industry. I heard from someone in the industry if you take any job no matter how peripheral and begin to make contacts, you slowly gain exposure to people who can consider your work.
Considering how corruptive the entertainment field is, being a writer may be the safest.

I think scriptwriters get started because they know somebody already in the business. I think the number of scriptwriters that didn't know anybody is close to zero. This is also true for writers in general.

Your heart needs to be fully in it. Campaigning involves a lot of time, having your personal life public, and dealing with malicious lies told about you.

Yeah, I understand. I think that I have meaningful ideas and I could put together a platform, but knowing myself - I am reluctant to want to go door knocking. In fact, I don't want to put in the effort to do that.
That doesn't mean you can't be successful.. I'd focus more on my Youtube channel..
But at this point I don't see myself door knocking for face to face time with constituents..
As for the nasty comments that can come with running for office or being an elected official, I think I have a thicker skin because I put forward a platform in the previous election and got a large dose of negativity online. So now I am more prepared mentally and know not to react to hostility from people who just don't like you and/or your ideas.
