My son was diagnosed as borderline AS at 12 years. I am going to go through the process. I have been living in the NT world for 38 years and can act quite normal. Has anyone gone through the testing process so I can study? I am tired of living a lie, and don't want to go back to the mental institutions.

Thanks,

What do you mean by "study?" Just speak honestly to the doctor, hopefully they will have the knowledge and expertise to give you an accurate diagnosis. It will never help to try to actively influence any diagnosis.

I definitely agree with Orwell and from having read your other posts, studying so you can get a diagnosis to use the system? I can understand if you need needs the system for financial support, access to medical stuff and all, but to use it simply for the sake of using it, doesn't make it right especially when you seem to say that you have 'adapted' to almost act normal.

You may also want to do more research in all the areas having an official dx of Aspergers may not be a benefit in... ie. custody issues.

This site is not portraying Aspies as good parents at all:

You need to learn to use the system or the system will use you. With the diagnoses, I can ride the bus for free and maybe get a scholarship for college. Life doesn't have to be so hard. I am tired of "scoring" illegal drugs to ease my symptoms and I am trying to do it the right way so my NT ex-wife won't call me a pothead and I can set an example for my kids. Do you even know what AS is?

AS is characterized by a human being missing a vital component in our nerves that allows us to understand and store complex human interaction when it goes to our brain. We were born this way, it is genetic. Our brains are different and the part of the brain where you would usually store this social information is free for other uses. We are like a cross between Data and Wharf from Star Trek. I have to rely on memories of faces and situations, give me a stranger or a strange place and I am totally severely anxious. The diagnoses will give me peace of mind and allow me to teach my children the right way to deal with rude children such as yourselves. There is no cure and you can only treat the symptoms of severe social anxiety and depression. Legal drugs aren't cheap either. The war on drugs finances america, otherwise we would be more broke than we are as a country.

You could have tried to help me with information you already had, but instead you felt a need to get on your "high horse" and be judgemental. Do you really think doctors know it all and care about you or your boys? Doctors are legal drug pushers. I have two boys also, and I have no hope of getting my boys back from my ex unless there is a death, which she also said that her new husband would take care of the boys if she died. I am seeing a counselor who specializes in Asperger's exclusively. He told me to blow bubbles for anxiety! I am not an idiot but I am surrounded by total morons! I've lived with this all my life, it is not a dream but a nightmare that I can't wake up from. I've kept all these feelings inside me and I should not have to. I am a good person and I am a champion for the mentally challenged. I've went homeless just so I would have memories in case I was faced with it in reality. I have set up complex social experiments to see what I need to know before it happens. I am a scientist and a comedian. Your brain recieves endorphins that attach to pleasure centers of the brain for a natural good feeling, no matter if it is positive reinforcement or negative reinforcement, a communication has been made.

Yeah, I'll pass whatever test they give me. Take a core sample from my brain.

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.

Mental institutions? I guess you want to seem you have AS so your behavior can be justified and they will leave you be, right? Sometimes the government interferes too much with one's lives, trying to take their brain, their kids, all that stuff ~_~

Ah well, I hope you pass whatever test you're talking about, and I hope you get to keep your kids ^^

Actually Mojo123, I do have an official dx of Asperger's Syndrome (have had the diagnosis now just about 2 1/2 years now) and have a son with Autism (dx. in July 2003), I don't use the system at all thank you. Why don't you go to the ASpar site I posted and see what they are trying to do to discourage people from accepting those with Asperger's Syndrome as being good parents... maybe then you'd see why Asperger's Syndrome can be a bit of risk when it comes to having an official dx. as a parent.

Actually I have had some really good luck in dealing with understanding professionals when it comes to myself having Asperger's as well as my oldest son having a diagnosis of Autism and my youngest being placed with a label of gifted.

Yes I know very well about what Autism and Asperger's is, I've done my research too and I have had opportunity to ask questions of some autism researchers/experts too that I met at workshops and all after my son was diagnosed with Autism and prior/during and after my Asperger's diagnosed when I was 31.

Secondly you quoted my response for another parent from the parenting forum which wasn't even relevant to my response I have posted in this thread and then start calling me judgemental.

There is no specifc tests they do... there is no one test or questionaire you could ever study that would guarantee you'll get a dx. Not every professional uses the same questionaires or interview process in determining a dx. If you could even 'study' for it, you'd end up giving a false representation of yourself rather than just going in there being yourself and letting the professional make the final opinion on diagnosis.

Sorry I don't have a 'high horse'... though my SO used to take care of a horse when he was in the military. And it was about 16H tall I believe. :)

Do you have solid proof that it is only "one" vital component and not multiple that factor in? Could you please link me to the studies that state this? I'd be interested in reading your sources.

Honestly I find you rude and with your attitude and all, so I have no desire to respond anymore. Go ahead use the system, that's your choice... I never needed to study to get my dx. Thank you.

I apologize, if my response was in error, please disregard. I am all alone trying to do this for myself. I should have taken my bi-polar meds. I am not bi-polar, I am asperger's. I don't like doctors misdignosing me and using me a guinea pig for something they do not understand. I got a work place referral through my workplace and had to kick my alchohic roommate out. My family was and is still poor. I left my family when I was 17 and can exist in the normal society. I am extremely frustrated at the process and people telling me it is in my head. My job is to wake people up, unless they are in denial that we are not normal, then I can't help anymore. God has released me from that responsibility. I don't have a car and people don't care that I walk in the rain to work and people laugh at me.

Again, I apologize for being rude and asking a rude question. I've never asked anyone for help before.

If this email is in error, please disregard.

Here is the webmd page for asperger's.

http://www.webmd.com/mental-health/tc/A ... c-Overview

I saw the picture of the nerve cell with the part missing somewhere on the web, I will try to recall where I was at, things are blurry sometimes. I have a mild autism and am severly anxious and clinically depressed. I have been all my life and was taught to self-medicate with illegal drugs as a child. I've given my counselor the wrongplanet webpage and my user name of mojo123 in the hopes he will read my posts and speed up the process of diagnoses. I have type ii diabetes also. I went to the ER last week for depression, anxiety and diabetes, they had to give me a sodium chloride bag.

You don't need to act. Just need to find a consultant that knows what they are talking about. Do your research. Unfortunately not every psychiatrist/psychologist will be properly trained in PDDs if at all. and family doctors are even less likely to be.

What is the point of acting? You should be honest about the drugs all the stuff, they will take that into account. Just say everything you have said here.

If you are not Asperger’s then pretending to be won't help you get better.

Some might fear getting diagnosed with a personality disorder that would not yield benefits or empathy from society and family.

Well acting might just do that. All things considered it a pretty dumb idea.

I’ve been there with doctors who don’t know. It took me a long time to figure things out, and I had to fight to get there at 24-25 even though 'experts' had seen me because of it from age 2. You just have to keep on telling what you know, telling lies will not help. If you are an aspie especially.

Also recommend going to an expert who specialised in adult diagnosis. But for the referral you might have to get referred by a GP or family doctor. Good advice: If you know a family doctor that is also a paediatrician go to them. They have more training in PDDs don't expect a GP to know about it, in the UK it is not the norm. Even the Psychiatrist that worked for the health trust that is to approve funding to go to a centre actively admitted he had no clue about it and asked me for the tests and information.

Particularly if its to defraud the government or to avoid paying child support.
