How would things be if people on TV and movies were shown stopping what they are doing and going off to use the bathroom?

It would be a distraction. In good writing you'd only show someone going to the bathroom if it's relevant to the story.

TV people don't use the toilets do they? I suppose they must do when they get home? They shower more than they use the toilets...
Maybe they go while in the shower?

This has always bothered me. Or that people never mishear each other unless it's relevant. I know it's more enjoyable the way it is but I wish TV would be more realistic.

Of course, I also enjoy pausing it to point out everything unrealistic about it, so I guess I shouldn't wish it was realistic. Although maybe my family should.

I once saw a Reddit post where someone said "Cartoon characters never sneeze unless it's relevant to the plot."
Someone else replied "Cartoon characters never do *anything* unless it's relevant to the plot."

Makes sense to me. Cartoons aren't real, they can only "do" what people draw and animate them to do. Why do people want them to everything we do in real life? That would get dull or awkward really quick.

I never saw it, but I understand The Sixth Sense had a character who sometimes went to the bathroom.

Someday someone will make a TV Show called The Golden Boys which will be the male answer to The Golden Girls. To be at least slightly believable, each of the characters will need to take a bathroom break at least once per episode.

It's Chekhov's gun that keeps them from being shown using the toilet.

One of my pet peeves is the number and amount of time people spending time in their bathrooms. on tv or music clips. Its the major reason I will never watch the movie "Trainspotting".
