I used to have a piece of one, I remember how heavy it was relative to it's size. The guy I got it from told me not to sleep w/ it near me at fiirst, so of course I slept w/ it under my pillow that very night. Had weird dreams as I recall, but feel it could have just been the power of suggestion. Don't know whatever happened to it. I moved a lot back then. Did however find 3 fulgrities (Proably spelled that wrong  pieces of stuff hit by lighting, 1 twig and 2 other ones) I thought I'd never see again when I cleaned out my storage. Would like to get another metorite fragment through. It was really cool contemplating the travels it had entailed just to reach my hands.

they travel much MUCH more then 1000 miles typically. IF a rock was to travel from earth to the sun that would be 93,000,000 miles, and thats a very short distance!

The Bay of Campeche, in the Gulf of Mexico, was formed by the same meteorite that killed the dinosaurs.

I'd love a meteorite! But I've only ever seen one, in the Jodrell Bank visitor centre. They wouldn't let me take it home :(

How to get your own (small) meteorites.

1) Get a plastic bowl about 12 to 18 inches in diameter.

2) Punch one or two small holes in the bottom (to let the rain out).

3) Take your bowl up to the roof and leave it there for six to eight weeks.

4) After you bring it back down you will see some dust and debris in the bottom, go over this with a magnet.

5) What's sticking to the magnet are fragments of meteors reduced to dust as they hit the atmosphere.

Very useful indeed...
But the question is: How can I contain these tiny, intergalactic treasures? Are they just dust?...
I might try this but I would like to know.

I've read of huge clouds of iron from supernovas. With enough of those around I don't doubt that there will be little pellets around all the time.

In Christmas 2004, there was an extremly rare snowfall in Houston. Parts of extreme southern Texas got snow as well. In the city of Brownsville, on the border with Mexico, a guy was selling a snowball for $5000.
