Well, I forgot what I said exactly but what I meant is, he is gonna be a lot more well known once he's dead but I definitely hope he stays alive for a while because I love his work and the more of it the better.

See that imples that he is dead, which of course he isn't, as you've pointed out. This is what you should have said:
"Well, that's gotta change... I mean, you being unfamiliar with his name, not him being
not dead." Which would mean what you were intending to say in the first place, it could probably be set out better but it carries the point across properly and that's what counts.
