Only my mom has actually used those words to describe me, but not in a definite sense... once she was wondering what program to put me in at a new school and considered the "handicapped program" as one of the options... once I was making cupcakes and didn't care how they looked; I jsut wanted to eat them, and my mom said that others aspire to seem intelligent and competent, not handicapped or like something is wrong with me or something, because I wasn't making the cupcakes all neat and tidy and pretty.

My shrink called me handicapped too, by social anxiety. :o

My mother said once to someone that I have a slight or mild disability but that she has every confidence in me. :)

No, actually most everyone insists there is nothing wrong with me so I should be able to suck it up and do things like everyone else.

I get called disabled or handicapped all the time, but this is mostly cause of my blindness. I rarely am called disabled/handicapped cause of my autism, and most certainly not by my parents.

I am only called "disabled" basically so I can collect Social Security Disability. But, having been misdiagnosed and mistreated since
I was 12 years old, I am grateful to finally have a correct diagnosis of Asperger's Syndrome. The term "disabled" simply allows a
person to qualify for whatever services exist, if they do at all.

Same with me. I've been on SS for over two years.

I have been called both. I was told I was handicapped by my last boyfriend and I have been labeled disabled by SSI and few people.

My brother's snotty comment to my diagnosis was "Congratulations, you have a disability".

Well HEY, you have a sibling. Brothers are SUPPOSED to tease their sisters. I'm sure you tease him also!

People have said that but I usually correct them and tell them not to call me that ever again.

My mother has used these words when describing asperger syndrome to my aunty and mother said "My daughter has been diagnosed with a 'disability' called asperger syndrome". I told her though not to call it a disability because I don't want people to think that I am disabled.

I have been called such numerous times and I tend to agree. It causes severe issues in my functioning at times and "disables' my mind from functioning properly....
Yet, who decides what is "normal'? How do we know they weren't abnormal themselves?
