Salutions! (Yay for Aspie formality!)

I'm a self-diagnosed Aspie who's gone undercover as an NT for nearly 18 years. (I'll be 18 in two weeks!) I identify with many of the challenges that afflict Aspies, and ironically enough, I was almost happy to come up with a "diagnosis", because I know many of my mannerisms send subliminal messages of my (socially detrimental) eccentricies, and now I know the reason behind my unintentional alienation.

Maybe that's why I struggle to hold the interest of an NT. I also look manly. It's not that I have an androgynous appearance - no, as a matter of fact, I look like a biologically male transvestite. I'm 5'10 (approx. 1.77 cm, I believe?) and my wrist is 6.5''. I'm 140 lbs, and my cranial circumference is 23".

I'm just enormous and gangly, and the incompatible infantile voice I have, and my ungainly gait, not to mention all my nervous energy, and my lack of carefree social savvy eliminate any chances of me having friends.

I truly recognize myself when I read the traits and difficulties of the members here. So, I'm looking forward to jumping in here in my quest to become NT! =)

Nice to meet you all, and I'm sorry to subject you to so much whining and b*tching on my first post! LOL

Welcome to WP :)

Sure, having AS can be depressing at times...but wouldn't you rather be "different" than just another clone? I sure would.
But it's good that you came to this site. I'm sure you will find many answers here.

Almost happy? Hell I was ecstatic. My life suddenly fell into place.

Naw, I don't want to be NT and I won't let them try. They can help with some of the rough areas, but that's it. I have gifts that come along with this stuff and I wouldn't trade them for the world. By the way, I'll be attempting to take over the world next Tuesday, you're welcome to join if you like. 8O

I don't like to play the age card, but some of us mature later. I had a baby face it seemed like forever, well it wasn't forever, lol. My attitude changed over time. I did get carded in Mexico in 70 when I ordered a beer, I was 20 and in the Army. I didn't even know they had a drinking age. I think the last time I got carded for proof of being 21 I was in my very late 30's. They have no trouble telling now, however. Give it a little time. :)

Welcome home

Yeah, I was "undercover as an NT" for 48 years.

Welcome to the Wrong Planet.

Well, I suppose it is relative to one's circumstances. I was diagnosed with childhood schizophrenia (as a child), given psychotropic drugs and electroshock (ECT) therapy. For years, I wondered what was wrong with me, why I was still socially awkward, but why I was, career-wise, doing quite well. Then, because of an insomnia problem earlier this year, I found myself seeing a psychiatrist who, after dismissing the earlier diagnosis, diagnosed me with AS and comorbid OCD. It has been the most liberating experience of my life. Suddenly, my life makes sense. I just wish it did not take until I was 51 years old.

Cheers,

Mark

Oh don't wish yourself NT. Even if you learn to fake it you'll never be one of them, they simply see things different. Explore your own limits, and boundaries, not theirs, then join in where theirs and yours overlap.

Considering I've never been considered NT, even without an AS diagnosis, I can honestly say the first seventeen years of my life were also spent trying to "fit in". But eventually I got tired of being told I didn't fit in and I would always be looked upon as an outsider. So I decided I'd rather be different then another lemming jumping over the cliffs.

My favorite comment about my 'eccentricness' was when I worked at a plastic factory and I was told "Sometimes we look at you and wonder what planet you fell off of." If that's what they want to think, so let it be. I want to learn to succed in a NT world, but I don't want to become one.

When I was a kid, some people (mostly adults) would recommend I read Robert Heinlein's classic sci fi novel (1961), Stranger in a Strange Land.

Don't you mean "Salutations?"

I'm a 46 year old NT and I'm still looking for way to fit in! Actually, I'm in the field of science and its almost bizzaar to be an NT in that field, thought I"m a teacher. Sort of combined theatre and chemistry and came up with K-12 science. Not bad, hey? (No, I'm not Canadian.)

the only thing that would have helped my aspie was to not have had the family that I do and I knew that but still it is nice to be here finally having to talk without making anyone feel rude or feeling I might come across as rude myself.

Welcome and all the best! At many aspects it's frustrating when you can't be as just NT ones and these are some of most important things of anyone's life. Some says being aspie has advantages... I prefer to attempt the tho sides (what is very hard) for feel full.

An interesting introduction. Personally, I like being the way I am (that is, formally diagnosed with AS). I find it... helpful... that AS is actually a very protective alteration in the brain. When it comes to smoking, drugs, and other things that are self-damaging, I adamantly refuse them with ease because my brain sees them as stupid. ^^

Not that I'm accusing you of using drugs or anything. o.O That was just an example.

In short, I prefer having AS to being NT. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, but if I was given the choice between them, even with all the stress and pain, I'd take AS. Funny, isn't it? ^^; In a sad way.
