I was taking an autism self-quiz on another forum and one of the questions was, "Do you tend to walk on the ball of your foot first when taking a step?" I had never really considered the way that I walked, but low and behold I do step using the ball of my foot first.

1.) Do you take steps using the ball of your foot first?
2.) Is this a common trait of people on the spectrum?

Seems to be a common trait. I do it depending on how fast I'm trying to go. If I'm really trying to keep the pace up, it's not possible, but the rest of the time it's pretty common. I also tend to run on the ball of my foot, which looks really odd, I think.

I do the same as mmaestro. I step on the ball of my foot when going slower pace, but it's not possble at a brisk pace.

I'm kind of in the process of being diagnosed with AS, but I do. Apart from when walking especially slowly, which tends to be a very pronounced heel first and slow foot movement down.

I have no idea what the ball of your foot is. Could someone please inform me without making me look like an idiot?

The pronounced area on your foot where your big toe meets the rest of your foot.

Thanks Robxx for the definition! :)

What I find interesting also is the way the soles of my shoes get worn out: big smooth patch on the ball and the opposite part of the heel is totally gone...

I find beneath the ball of my foot, the stitching keeping the leather of the shoe on the sole and the sole on the inside heel always wear out really quickly. My feet drag a bit, Size 11UK/size 12US and Dyspraxia do not bode well for my poor Adidas.

I walk on the balls of my feet in bare-feet, because I don't like the jarring shock of landing on my heels... or the noise I make. Recently when exercising, I've been trying to walk on the balls of my feet as well, since my knees are kind of wrecked from fast long-stride walking, and I've been hearing more and more about how we're naturally "supposed" to walk... so maybe we just have it right to begin with.

Cold-surfaces and sharp surfaces I walk on toes
Regular surfaces, I'm not sure because I start thinking about them and that in turn makes me do them. I'll have to get my mom to watch me walk I guess lol.

I also walk on my toes when I'm going up and down stairs...and oddly when I run o.O

I walked on the balls of my feet, a lot, as a child. My parents kept on telling me, not to do that. I guess, that I was trying to be taller and thinner, than I was. I also used to walk around, with my neck stretched, for the same reason.

Isn't it normal to walk on the balls of your feet??? I'm confused!

Anyway, I walk just by putting my entire foot on the floor- heel AND ball. It makes a pretty loud sound on wood. People tell me I am not walking correctly.

I don't think i do it much, but it is a common trait. It gets referred to as "toe-walking" when someone walks just on the ball of their foot.

1. Sort of.

2. Yeah, it's a trait of Autism. I believe it falls under the 'unusual gait' category.

I walk with the entire front third of my foot on the ground, and the other two thirds either not touching or barely touching the ground.

I suspect it's some weird combination of my Autism and my Cerebral Palsy, as it's because of what people have said about cold or rough surfaces and also because it feels uncomfortable on my legs to do it the other way.

Walking the other way hurts! 8O

I've always found it difficult to keep from walking that way, especially when I'm not wearing shoes. My parents were always telling me to stop it when I was a kid, I always tried to stop it, and I still do it to this day. And yes, it is a common trait.
