There are actually several people who claim to be the maitreya Buddha. The one you referenced is discussed by Benjamin Creme, but his existence is questionable.

Here is an Iranian fellow in New Mexico who claims to be the Maitreya. He conducts weekly "satsangs" (basically, lectures) through Paltalk.com:
