Two days our two adult Quails, Kiwi and Kipo, had their eggs hatch! The chicks are, expectedly, VERY cute, and I've uploaded some pics of them! Two of them, however, got stepped on in the old mushy food and were unable to get back up. The first one has now died, but the second has recovered well and is now back with the other chicks. He/she is in the first pic, before he recovered. We used my desk lamp to subsitute for Kipo's body warmth.

How adorable! I have seen wild NZ quails, at a uni fieldtrip on Tiritiri Matangi Island.. they were very sweet.

Makes me want to cuddle the little cheep-cheeps (but very carefully).

They are Chinese Painted (button) Quail, aren't they? Beautiful, they are one of my favourite bird species. Knowing how small the adults are, the chicks must be tiny.

Those look like domestic Quail to me. The wild ones are differently coloured.

there is a such thing as a domestic quail? I've only seen the ones that lie in my back yard.

Yes, they are quite popular as aviary birds and pets.
