My son.. who is almost 5.. has been officially diagnosed with Aspergers/ASD.

His main issues are food (will only eat 5 things) and really has a major problem with communications and literal words.

For example, today he said "Mom, Dream with the sun", but what he meant was "Mom, I'm going for a nap in the afternoon". He insists that he's turning 30 on his Birthday and in general speaks like Yoda.

Were any of you like this? How hard and long was it before you got it straightened around?

thanks....
Christine

This is actually quite common.

I got out of it quickly, though I still tend to take things literally (not say them literally, though).

Oh no... he definately has no idea what he is saying. Most things come out wrong.

instead of stirring he'll "rounding it"

when he got a needle for tests he called it a "circle funnel"

If he does up his pants it's "turning on my fly"

Everyone is either a "brother" "sister" "grandma" "grandpa" "mom" or a "dad"... he won't say it's a boy toy, but a "brother toy" It really gets embarassing when a young gray haired person talks to him, he will say "bye grandma"

Speaking like Yoda, I enjoy.

Your son's way of putting things is poetic, to me.

The reference to yoda was about word order. Word choice is apparently something some AS people have trouble with. Oddly From what I understand, they ALL get over it. I never had that problem though. BTW "Does up his pants" sounds about as odd as "turning on my fly"! 8O
