Smoking is a known carcinogen that causes an array of diseases, both short and long-term. Smoking around children doubles the risk of SIDS and dramatically increases bronchitis, pneumonia and other severe respiratory illnesses that cause children to be hospitalized every year. Further, smoking can cause or worsen asthma. Just one hour in a very smoky room is equivalent to smoking about ten cigarettes. If this was happening by any means other than cigarette smoking, it would be considered abuse. If parents were, say, repeatedly exposing their child to another known toxin, they would probably be arrested and charged in addition to having their children removed from their home. And rightly so!

If people want to throw their own health to the wind, fine. When you're an adult, you have the right to make that decision. Children don't have any defense or recourse. Willfully and knowingly exposing children to secondhand smoke is deliberately risking their health and wellbeing. It should be a crime. Children deserve a nurturing, healthy environment to grow in.

Agreed. I'm a smoker who hates smoking. I hate the smell of it, I hate the taste of it, I hate the dangers of it and most of all the inconsiderate smokers. I quit smoking while I was prego, and unfortunately started back up again after I had my son. I only smoke outside though. Sucks going outside every half hour to sit on my porch in 20 degree weather, but I feel good knowing that nasty sh** isn't going into my kid.

I don't let anyone else smoke around my kid either. Everyone knows that. Some don't care though. There are the tards that think opening a window or going in the other room is okay. It's not even close to okay.

See, I respect that.

Though somewhat unrelated, I also hate inconsiderate non-smokers, too. People who try to downplay or "talk me out of" needing a cigarette. OH YOU CAN WAIT, YOU'LL BE FINE.

Yes. After I stab you.

Smoke or stab, smoke or stab? Just let me smoke and shut up.

While my dad was alive he never smoked indoors, only outdoors or in the car with the windows open. He was fairly considerate about only harming himself.

It's very good to encourage and tell others why your smoking is actually good for them. It reduces your urges to stab them.

When my mother and father were living with one another, they smoked around me all the time. They thought that "second hand smoke" was just a rumour that had been started to scare people.

When my mother and father split up when I was three years old, my mother tried to quit smoking. She didn't quit until I was 6 years old and had an asthma attack. I stopped having problems with asthma when I was about 9 years old.
Unfortunately, when I was 12, my mother started smoking again and still smokes inside of the house with all of the doors and windows closed. Now, we have lots of pets inside aswell, so not only will I be breathing in the smoke, but so will the pets.

That is a sad story Brittany. I would suggest asking your mom to smoke outside but she might take it the wrong way and lash out at you.

I am a smoker but I smoke outside.

I don't smoke, but since I work for a moving and storage company, everyone, save a few people, smoke. I've gotten used to it, and they smoke even when in the trucks, and it sucks when I'm in the middle between two guys who are smoking, that's only happened..........once or twice.

I don't plan on smoking, ever.

Drinking.....my 21 is in a year.

It's cool that she tried...not so cool that she started back up again. Both my parents smoked in the house, so I can relate. My children are not allowed in their home.

I hate it when mail carriers and delivery people smoke in the trucks. I buy and sell on eBay, and occasionally things will arrive to my customers or to me smelling like cigarette smoke. Infuriating. Similarly, when my daughter's big girl bed was delivered, it reeked of cigarette despite being mostly encased in plastic because the delivery people on the truck were smoking from the store to my home. Oh, and let me not forget the carpet installers who, while laying new carpet throughout my home, proceeded to pitch more than a pack worth of cigarettes on my front lawn.

Like I said, if people want to smoke, that's up to them...until it affects me or my kids.

Smoking - one of the things I hate the most.

I'm not a smoker, my parents have never done it, but I've been around people who have my entire life. As a result, my lung capacity isn't where it should be.
