I'm not sure any of my former friends would have called me their best friend, but nowadays I'm pretty convinced that I'm noone's best friend, and that goes without saying, since I have no friends.

Join the club. If I were to get married. I wouldn't have a single friend to invite.

No. I have one person who I consider to be an "in-person" (not online) friend in my city (not counting my husband). I have a handful of online friends I chat with once in awhile. But no, I don't feel like anyone's close confidant or anything. I've often had a great deal of difficulty with even the concepts of "friendship" and "friends." I've received so many mixed messages. And I've seen people ACT like someone's friend to their face, then tear them to pieces behind their back. I don't want to be involved with that. I find my "friendships" tend to go okay until I need something (like understanding, or comfort) - then I find myself quite alone.

Apparently I'm either not good at being a friend, or not good at choosing them. Or I attract the wrong kind. Or something.

I know that I am no ones best friend. I don't have any real life friends, so it's not just me feeling sorry for myself, it's true.

Even when I did have two real life "friends" in school, I know that I was not their best friend, as they didn't seem to want to spend a lot of time with me, compared to what they did their other friends.

I detest the words "best friend" anyway, they just seem to start conflict and end friendships. Well, that is what I have seen.

I do, but he was forced to go to boarding school. I'm seeing him this Christmas.

Believe it or not, this is normal for friendships in the NT world. Believe it or not, NT people are often friends with people that they don't necessarliy like that much. They probably don't show as much respect towards them, but they are still considered friends. The companionship aspect is more important than whether they like that person. People with AS have a different definition of friendship. We want to really like the person in order to be friends with them.

I had a best friend for about a year and a half. Now I have nobody in real life except my husband and my dogs.

No, I'm not anyone's best friend, and no one is mine. It's been so very long since I have had a best friend that I'm not even sure what it's like. It's been many years, and I'm no longer a teenager. I don't really know what all it entails to be close friends as an adult.

TBH, there's been very, very few people that I have ever wanted to spend mass amounts of time with. God, I know I must sound so egocentrical, but it's true. Most people get on my nerves when I spend very much time around them. I start to dread the phone ringing, or my doorbell chiming. Before I found out that I may have AS I thought that there was something wrong with other people that I knew for always being so clingy. I thought that they were the ones with issues, because they seemed to not ever want to be alone as much as I did.

I get along with my parents and one of my brothers pretty well but in a weird way.

With the brother I get along with, either he's talking his ass off or I am but we don't have a lot of 'give and take' type of conversations. The one who isn't talking is usually alternating between listening and being bored to death.

With my dad, we usually have to argue about something in order to talk.

With my mom it's similar as with my brother except that I am much more likely to be bored to death and she's more likely to not notice. Although, my brother also fails to notice quite often.

(Sometimes I think my whole family might be slightly autistic.)

(My other brother is autistic and schizophrenic and he's extremely hard to really talk to.)

I would have very very few people to invite too. There's a quote from Kill Bill 2 about that that I've always connected with:

Beatrix: You want to come to the wedding?

Bill: Only if I can sit on the bride's side.

Beatrix: You'll find it a bit lonely on my side.

Bill: Your side always was...a bit lonely.

The magic is lost outside the context of the movie, but I've always liked it.

My husband and I invited no one. We ran off and made the day all about us! It was a beautiful little ceremony, and we liked it.

As for best friends, I have one who says I am hers. Two, if you consider my four year old daughter who says to me daily, "Mommy, you're my best friend ever." :queen:
