I used to kind of be an anime nut when I was a teen; I can't stand it now, with the exception of Azumanga Daioh (because it is just THAT awesome of a show). Manga, on the other hand, is a completely different story; I love it. My favorite mangas are Battle Royale, MPD Psycho, and Azumanga Daioh (the two former being extremely violent and messed-up, the later being cute and silly to a tasteful, non-childish degree). I have Battle Royale and Azumanga Daioh in their entire volume collections.
When I used to watch anime, I liked Slayers and Patlabor; I do not regret getting into them. Chobits was okay as well, but I sort of found it to be too girly to really get into without embarassing myself. I still love Ghost in the Shell, but only in the form of their movies. I lost interest in anime when I was 20 because...well I'm not sure, I just grew out of it I guess. Most of the existing anime is watered-down childish crap, and it's been that way since it's beginning. My former interest in anime gradually transformed into my current interest in East Asian films such as "Cure" by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, the MPD Psycho television series by Takashi Miike, and "Oldboy" by...well whoever the South Korean gentleman was who made it.
