Can not believe this abuse of children is allowed to continue...

Shock Treatment May Continue At Special Education School
Main Category: Psychology / Psychiatry News
Article Date: 23 Dec 2007 - 8:00 PST

A special education school which has been in the news for inappropriate use of electric shock treatment has been allowed to continue using shock treatment for the most dangerous and self-destructive behaviors. In such cases the shock treatment must lead to a diminution in the undesirable actions. The Judge Rotenberg Educational Center (JRC) has to prove that these treatments really work.

The one-year reauthorization contrasts with previous ones which lasted two years each time.

Electric shock treatment at the center must never be used for petty infractions, such as leaving one's seat without getting permission or using offensive language. The school has been ordered to show that it is committed to phasing out this type of aversion therapy. This phasing out must be especially so for students who are on the verge of leaving and about to enter the community.

In August 2007 three adolescents were given several electric shocks after a former resident called pretending to be a supervisor. The residents in question were asleep at the time, the caller told staff to wake them up and give them dozens of shocks with restraints in response to behavior that had allegedly taken place over five ours beforehand. A series of phone calls with instructions were made by the former resident between 2am and 4.45am. Although the JRC claims the victims were evaluated by JRC nursing staff, JRC's doctor, as well as the victim's treating clinical Doctor, and found to be in good health, one victim was further examined at a hospital and was reported to have two areas of first degree burns related to the presence of the GED.

The center pledges not to utilize delayed punishments. It also says it will not punish children who are asleep with electric shocks.

Many are surprised the school was not ordered to end shock treatment straight away.

The Judge Rotenberg Educational Center is a special needs school in Canton, Massachusetts serving both high-functioning students with conduct, behavior, emotional, and/or psychiatric problems and low-functioning students with autistic-like behaviors.

Perhaps the people who are allowing this to go on,need to be strapped up with these shock kits to make them see sense [wake them up first,of course......or maybe not].

Looks like a Chinese the armor -

D.C. mayor’s aide would halt funds to Rotenberg Center over shock therapy

One Flew Over the Cookoo's nest is a great movie, but unfortunately it spread some misinformation about shock treatments. They should never be used as punishment, but the scientific fact is it does show a degree of effectiveness in treating some symptoms of mental illness.

Electroconvulsive Treatment is different to aversive shock treatment. I think it's likely that the ones who kept giving shocks to kids just for leaving their seat, being untidy or saying a couple of rude words would make Nurse Ratched look like Mary Poppins.

I watched the video on the school site. If it does what they claim I link it to chemotherapy and Dialisis. It's saving lives, painfully.
Though the Dr does strike me as a bit like the Frankenstien mad doctor "they never understood my genius" type.
I watched footage of people so not functional, so violent . . . .that was horrible. AN amputation is bad death is horrible.
Keep in mind most teachers and doctors and such actually enterthier feild because they want to help.
If you watch the before and after videos, you may feel PTSD is a price worth paying for life.

Depression is a living death, and sometimes in some cases they're better off dead.

PS: Where did all the other posts in this thread go???

I enjoyed that article very much.
I eat a healthy diet. I have heard about St Johns wort. But because of the meds I often forget how low i was . I was taken to the emergency room for a suicide risk just a couple of monthe ago. I wasnt, but I was so far gone that my Doctor thought I was.
Now I'm remedicated and involved in social circles, new friends new creativity.
I agree not everyone on the spectrum needs to be medicated. I do. Not everyone needs to be subjected to the types of "torture" the kids at the shock therapy school are. But THEY do. I watched the videos. These kids were low functioning. They chewed through thier own tounges, tore out all thier hair. I really believ doctors do not enter the profession to do antthing more than help. Thier ego and investigative nature does seduce some into studing the illness more than the peole.
So you just want to be understood as yourself without trying to make yourself feeel you're compromising?
Well welcome to being Black.
Ive been in other cultures and lived at jobs but because I was a forigner I was given more leeway. I think thtas why I did so well.
What I resent now is in my current midwest yuppie neighborhood other white people thing I'm one of them. Thats its OK to talk to me in discouraging wispers about blacks.
I get along better with blacks better because I share a little bit of what theyre going through. My parents were racist. I couldnt understand. My neighbors son married a Korean woman I asked why was that ok but werenot allowed to date black girls?
My mom told me because the Korean woman isnt AS DIFFERENT.
What? She doesnt evn think in the same language as us?
My father told me the difference between a black man and a N***er. Basically a black man assimilates, knows his place.
Asian Americans adapt to US culture, African Americans do not. Its not a matter of color its culture. So long as one type of people dislike another type of people AS people will not be accepted as equals to NTs.
Its a culture thing.

I agree its a culture thing and people tend to avoid what they do not understand, keep at arms length.

I really wish people would stop trying to change us, NTs often do this with other groups of people to try and integrate them, all it does is make them depressed, as no one can be what they are not.

Thats the problem with aspergers being invisible !,others just do not get that fact that there is a whole group of people who are just different.

Sock therapy school: I feel institutionalizing these children is the worse thing anyone can do, as quite often the boredom factor is enough to drive them crazy, often having very active minds.

I spent just 8 hours in emergency at the weekend (nothing to major) but the boredom was the hardest thing for me to deal with, not being able to keep my mind active...
