I thought, as men are told they are not allowed in the women's sub-forum, that it would be an invitation-only situation, or a "can only join if you have registered as a female" (of course ANYone can register as a woman, but that isn't the issue) situation.

I hvae said I don't want men replying to my post but they are still doing so. Great responses, but that's not the point. The point is I posted a very personal issue in the women's-only sub-forum, and I find men are not only reading it, but flipping well replying?

I ask you: won't most women be posting in that sub-forum in view of no men reading their posts? And, if there is going to be a women's-only forum, and men are told they are not allowed to enter that forum, then it shouldn't it be made possible for only female members to join?

I was just about to start a new topic to post a note to Alex here but I saw this and figured it was best to add my voice here instead.

I don't trawl through the discussions, I use an RSS Feed Reader for the whole WP Site. That means that I just get a list of everything that is NEW.

If I see anything interesting or anything that I think I can help with, I click the subject, have a quick read and (if I can help) post a response.

As a result, I usually have no idea which forum I'm reading or posting in.

First of all - Fiona - I'm sorry. I only found out that it was the women's forum when I got a return post. No offense intended. I certainly never went into the forum to look. I hope you'll be forgiving of my error.

Secondly... Alex... there are a few problems with this..
1. Posts from the Womens only forum are being made available to all via RSS
2. Posts from the adults only forum are being made available to all via RSS
3. Not sure about the adults only, but I'm not being restricted from the women's only forum.

I think that we mostly know what sort of technical behavior we want from the site but I'm not sure how easy or difficult it would be - don't know anything about the WP systems. Is it possible to fix this problem? Is there a reason why it's like this?

I'm not complaining but I think that if it can't be fixed, we need to at least make sure that the women posting into their women's only forum know what the conditions are.

Brother.

Are you aware there's not even a men's forum? And you'd very much like a super-secret women's forum within the women's forum?

I suggest we start up a collection to buy you a burqua.

Are you aware that there was a men's forum at one time? And that it was removed because it was more or less a continuation of the adult only forum?

Personally, I don't care that men post in the women's section, provided that they're not being jerks about it. I posted a more sensitive topic in there awhile back, and the first response was by a male; it was a good response, and I didn't mind. There have also been topics in there by males who wish to know something about women, and that doesn't bother me either.

The only reason that I'm replying to this at all is because quite frankly, I am tired of seeing the 'there's no men's forum' thing being pulled up every single time there is an issue with the women's forum. It's not even that the people who mention it want specific topics (or if they do, they never say so), it's simply the principle of the matter. It also never seems to matter that there's a lot of posts concerning why it's gone and that it was there in the first place; people make new threads on it anyway.

The men's forum was not practical, and it's not there anymore. They had their chance, and it didn't go well. The women's forum is more practical, people actually use it to discuss women's only issues, and it's still there.

Personally I can't see what men would use such a forum for. It's not like we have any secrets.

I wouldn't reveal my secret identity there even if the forum did exist. :P

You could, as long as you don't reveal it in the women's forum :P

Well... I'm not going to be your best advocate because personally I do not see a need for a "women only" forum at all on WP. There's no way of making it private enough to be useful. If I had a question I didn't want the guys here to know I was asking, I'd ask it under a different handle at some forum (elsewhere) dedicated to that topic.

I would, however, like to see the "NO guys allowed!" part removed from the forum description. It causes confusion. Since well before I joined, it was understood that men do indeed post there so I'm not clear on why it says that they cannot.

Unless it is done in a similar way like the adult forum, based on gender, on second thought, not sure if that could really work.

Probably it could have been originally intented to be like that, but it is not possible if the access is not restricted and threads from that forum can be seen in the "View posts since last visit" link.

Gee, I'm a newbie and even I know there used to be a men-only sub-forum!

Btw - what the heck is wrong with someone saying "only women may answer this"? Or "only people aged 18 and over may answer this"? Or - shock, horror - "only men may answer this"? If someone makes such a request, then, like it or no, I would respect that request. Surely there are plenty of other posts to which you can respond. Or, if you feel you're the best person on the plant (Wrong Planet or otherwise) to respond to a particular post, and for whatever reason you are part of a group that has been requested to NOT reply, the send a PM, for Heaven's sake!

Check my signup date: not many've been around here as long as I. Of course I'm aware of that.

The only reason I point out the lack of a men's forum is to point out the sheer absurdity of someone wanting a super-secret forum-within-a-forum, just for XX chromosome humans, because they somehow imagine themselves not being "safe" in an otherwise gender-mixed forum.

Give 'til it hurts, folks: that burqua's obviously badly needed here to protect fragile females from evil wandering male eyes.

If you're the forum owner or a moderator, I have no problem whatsoever with you formulating and enforcing reasonable rules. If you're a poster who's bent on forcing your own odd rules on others (aka: "power tripping"), get used to disappointment.
