I am in a major state of ennui at the moment. I am trying to find a new interest, because at the moment, I have pretty much burned out on my current interests. I burn myself out on many interests because I had such a major interest to begin with (Doctor Who), and once I got bored of that (for about 3 years), I haven't found an interest that has really sustained me like that, so, I really, really need a new obsession.

Now, at the moment, I have been toying around with looking at unsolved crimes and applying my mind to them to sharpen it up again. History may be a solution, but it is yet to catch fire. I need a little help, people. Any suggestions?

My previous obsessions include (in no particular order):

*Doctor Who

*Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels

*James Bond

*Final Fantasy

*British comedies like Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, Blackadder, Red Dwarf, The Young Ones, Bottom, The League of Gentlemen and Black Books

*Dune

*Stephen King

*Metal Gear

*Silent Hill

*Harry Potter (lasted until I read Order of the Phoenix. Hated that book)

*Virology

*Forensics

*Darwin Awards

*Footrot Flats

*Chopper

*8-Bit Theater

Any ideas, people?

An artistic pursuit, like photography, drawing, painting, or writing. You only really get "done" with those when you run out of ideas. Which, of course, doesn't happen often.

I cant believe you search for an interest, mine just come randomly in time when they come, I do no searching. Usually one interest is connected to the other. When I was 7 I was engulfed with watching Desert Storm unfold on TV, I was facinated by it. Recently I have found a renewed interest in the actual battle plan, the players, weapons, just going into more detail this time 17 years later. I read alot about that and then came my next obsession outa this interest, the Kuwait oil disaster. Specifically how to put out oil well fires, the different ways.

Your list is difficult to work with the way I am discribing, I guess me and you do things a bit differently.

Good luck with your search.

SAME HERE! I probably won't get bored again but, if I do, I will just move back to my OLD interest.

Can't on my computer, I don't think I'm allowed to install MMORPGs on this, 'cause it's from the uni. Besides, you have to pay beyond the initial buying price. Once I get my own computer though, I may consider it.

I am currently writing a novel, but I need more than that. My drawings are crap, as are my paintings, and I have no interest in photography.

I actually did think of battle tactics, looking at the works of Caesar and so forth. Not recent wars, but old warfare. But it hasn't clicked with me yet.

So do you feel you want or need to force yourself to find an interest? What other things do you do in life, work? relationship? Time is something some of us just dont have much of, maby you are more fortunate and need something to fill that void. I myself have little time and dont follow my passions as much as I wish I could. If I had more time I would probably be doing the same thing you are, I am envious of ya :) .

I like old warefare also, but dont know many specifics, I am far much more knowledable about modern conflict, tho I dont like reading much about the current horrors of Iraq and Afganistan, Desert Storm, Vietnam and WW2 are my favs.

Jeeze... we are so morbid

I have plenty of time on my hands. I do have a thesis to do, but I cannot function without having something pleasurable to do, and I'm losing pleasure in my interests.

You could try doing a random search on Wikipedia or any other(for a start). Maybe you'll find a topic or topics that interest you.

Or hope something comes up on the 'article of the day'.

When in doubt, ask an autistic. Chances are, they're obsessed with what you need to know.

You're right, it's not a good suggestion :? . It's what I do every now and then, and so far it didn't work for me.

If you like puzzles and mysteries, you could try and find the answer to tough questions you would ask yourself and others and yet to which nobody had the answer.

i sometimes find that i feel like that when i am not sleeping enough, OR not getting enough time entirely on my own, OR am stopping myself from doing/thinking/saying/expressing something new/different which perhaps seems unacceptable or risky, ( as in , on the cusp of a revolution, little or large, as such , a good sign!! ). otherwise i don't actually know what boredom like that feels like.

Good luck!
