A music snob is someone who listens to the most obscure artists, hates mainstream, or thinks any band who is popular sucks.

I'm usually the latter. And if I like a band that is popular, I hide it.

What a ridiculous way to live. :?

haha. Im finding I like the band Paramore, even though I was resisting HEAVILY at first. But you know, I kinda like Hayley's husky tomboy voice. And how she sounds the same live, even better.

hi- first post!
Personally I'm sort of clueless when it comes to music, but I am a shameless book snob. I openly sneer at the "Davinci Code" and feel a bit miffed if I see someone reading a favorite book of mine who I feel is "unworthy" of it. Terrible, I know. But there you have it. As for music, I pretty much listen to the same Cat Stevens cd over and over. :)

Haha dolly! I admit sometimes I feel the same way, that is unless the person has good taste.

I tend to like more obscure music but it has nothing to do with popularity. The simple fact is that there are many more obscure bands than mainstream bands. More bands = more variety = easier to choose something to my liking.

I prefer specific kinds of music (certain sounds and certain kinds of lyrics).
I'll chance about one listen to pretty much everything, of course, but I don't say "I listen to (Artist X)" unless I find (Artist X) very appealing and listen to (Artist X) a lot or unless (Artist X) falls in one of my preferred genres or music scenes.

Yes, I listen to the "most obscure artists". Yes, I hate the mainstream. No, I do not think that any band that is popular sucks for that reason alone.

I started seeking out more obscure artists because I got bored with the mainstream when I was in high school. I did not know anyone else who listened to non-mainstream music, so if it was trendy somewhere, I was not aware of that. My taste has stayed the same. I'll give anything a listen or two. Then I continue to listen to whatever I like, no matter how popular or unpopular it is.

I don't care if people call me a music snob. I think I am a music snob because I know more about music than most people, not because of what my taste happens to be. Taste is subjective, but knowledge can be measured. I admit that I don't know everything about music, and that the knowledge I have accumulated is the result of an obsession. I prefer to be called a "rock nerd" or "music nerd" because I think it's a more accurate description.

I don't find my life to be ridiculous. I have a lot of fun. I do the same things everyone else does, except that everything revolves around music. I go to the record store instead of the mall. I read books about musicians instead of whatever normal people read. I give my guitar a make-over instead of giving myself a make-over. I listen to records instead of watching TV. I watch documentaries about bands instead of fictional movies. I go to see bands instead of going to sporting events. Sure, I'm obsessive and geeky, but I like my life.

I just wanted to point out that my "ridiculous way to live" statement was just me being sarcastic. I dont mean it in offense :)

Not really. I've got mostly obscure artists on my ipod but there's 2 Christina Aguilera songs on there, and a few Avril Lavigne ones. And I have three Alizée albums, which is mainstream French pop. People who look through my music on there get to those artists and say 'huh'? as if my tastes in other more obscure artists should preclude liking them, but I've never felt that way.

No, but I listen to plenty of bands that no one has ever heard of.

People can listen to whatever they want, I may not like it... but they don't like what I like either... so it goes both ways.

I just wish more people I knew were into the weird, strange music I was into... I have to find my own music out there... and it's sometimes hard work finding music I like. If my friends had exactly the same taste in music, we could share music more easily....

If I try to explain what I'm into to most people... well I can't, thats the thing. I find over time I move further and further away from the mainstream and into my own little world where everybody knows who the xerox teens are.

The thing is, a lot of people who don't like mainstream music seem to lack the impetus to go out and find something they do like, so instead they just moan about how what's on the radio isn't as good as whatever boring 60's album Mojo and Q are telling them is a classic. Now *that* is a ridiculous way to live!! !

Not really, if I'm feeling it I'm feeling it.
