Lately, I don't want to go to work.
I work six days a week, but only about four hours a day.
I haven't have 2 days off together in five months.
Lately I just really don't feel like dealing with it all. No it's not hard or anything, I just want a break.
I can't call in sick. I just can't lie, and I'd feel really guilty anyway if I did.
I am the one mostly responsible for keeping things running smoothly. Some days I really want to just do the physical work and let someone else handle the main stuff, but it doesn't work that way.
When I have a job, I feel like they need me and I can't miss any time.
When I don't have a job, I feel useless. Unless I have a good reason, like major illness or a broken bone.
I've already been sick this year, but it was minor, I didn't miss work. And I usually don't get sick twice. I would really rather not break anything, but sometimes it almost sounds appealing.

I don't mind my job in general, I just feel like I need a little break.

Anybody else have trouble with this?

Is this "tipical" or am I strange?

As someone normally healthy, just think of sick time as "sick of coming in" time, and you may need a day off to recover from that ailment ;)

If you've been working solidly for five months you surely must be due a holiday? I'd try and get some legitimate time off.

Yes, I've done shift work and the thing that gets to you is not having two (or more) days to yourself. You need to rearrange your shifts so that you do have a 'weekend'. If not, find a job that doesn't demand your presence 6 days a week. Unless you're working for yourself, there's no need to put in that kind of effort. Generally people don't appreciate it anyway.

We're trying to plan a vacation or something, just not sure what, when, where, ect.
But just time off for no reason? Hard to do.
It's not "shift work" by the way, that's just the hours.
And it's possible that they don't appriciate me.

I'm allowed 4 weeks off a year, I think that's about average. I use two for a proper holiday, in summer, but the other two I just use for when I feel like I'll go mental if I don't take time off. I work on my writing and go to more gigs than normal, maybe go to a couple of art exhibitions. Time off doesn't have to be to go away. I'm sure your boss would rather you were honest and said you need a week off. You will probably have to give 4 weeks lead time, but it goes quicker once you know you're getting a break.

I've only done it once and it pained me greatly. I did it because I was absolutely tired, did not feel like dealing with stupid customers, and... I wanted to watch a seahawks game. (they lost, too) I was so nervous about doing it and I kept freaking out they'd think I was faking it.

But hey, it felt GREAT to not be in work that day.

I don't call in sick. I call in 'not feeling well'.
Although I haven't done this for quite some time with my current job, it was when I really was pretty ill.

At other jobs, I have called in 'not feeling well' when I was really stressed out emotionally.
I knew that I really needed a day off for myself or to go get something very important done because I was so upset about it that going to work would exasperate my feelings and I wouldn't be much good at work.

Feeling unwell emotionally is a legitimate excuse not to go in to work... at least to me.
There have been times at my current job when I wish some of my fellow employees would have called in 'not well', instead of showing up that day and causing issues.

I agree that you should find a way to take a couple of days off for yourself.
This whole 'work ethic' of working 5,6, even 7 days a week is not something we naturally do as animals... we don't 'NEED' to do this... we do it because our employers demand it and we have been trained since the industrial revolution to do it.

I work a job where I absolutely cannot call in sick. It sucks.

I'm in a better mood this week.
My husband has been getting a lot of 3 & 4 day weekends at his job lately (holidays), so that was making me more agrivated. It's harder when there's a warm body you have to leave.

But my mood is better now. For now.

Call in and say you're having some problems with your stomach. Oftentimes, "problems with the stomach" implies diarrhea. This is enough to deter most bosses from denying your sick day request. After all, if you'll be running to the bathroom every hour, and presumably, spending some time there, so it's not like you'll be productive. Even more so, an illness like that might even make your boss encourage you to stay home. Obviously, don't use the word "diarrhea" in your request; simply saying "problem with my stomach" implies it in most cases. In the end, you'll get to enjoy two days off in a row.

When you return to work, act like nothing is wrong, and don't bring anything up. If your boss asks you about your illness, say something like: "I'm not sure, but I think ordering my burger rare was a mistake [implying that you ate at a restaurant during the last few days]". This provides an obvious, even slightly humorous, explanation to your stomach problems, and makes your story sound truthful. It's not too uncommon to get stomach problems from eating undercooked meat, so people will understand. Having given your answer, proceed with your usual day as normal.

Is that because you're thr only person who can do your job role? I have that issue. I have an appointment with my shrink tomorrow and my boss has told me I have to get in early, (ie. 6, 6.30 am) so I can do my normal days work and then go. Charming!

Sometimes I call in "not feeling well" but its hard, I just hate lying. Its like Im not sick but I just need an extra day off, just feel so tired and disinterested in the work. Plus the work can sometimes be quite physical and I push myself too hard. My body must just want rest sometimes.

heh I guess if I did a job I loved they would have to boot me out at the end of the day though.

My job gives me vacation time, so if I need an extra day off because I don't feel like working, I use a vacation day. I don't like to travel, so it's not like I'm going to take a real vacation. Instead of giving myself one two week vacation a year, I'll give myself several 3 or 4 day weekends. My bosses don't mind it if I take my vacation in little chunks like that, since it means I don't get as behind on my work.

If I don't require actual medical attention, I don't use a sick day. If I used a sick day when I'm not sick, I'd have to worry about whether someone is going to see me out and about, and report back to my bosses that I sure looked healthy for a sick person when they saw me at the mall..

point systems are the devil. if i didnt have to worry about getting fired id call in at least once a week. i usually feel too depressed to want to leave my house, especially knowing that im gonna be surrounded by people for a few hours for low wages, and im gonna have to be friendly to them, but i cant just call in and say "hey i feel really down today, so im not gonna make it in to work, bye".
