Hitchhiking for aspies, is it impossible?

In most parts of the US, it's not a very safe way to travel. But I used to live in a relatively safe, rural area where a lot of people hitch hiked. I frequently gave rides to hitch hikers, usually because I knew them from around town. It was fun having a random person show up in my car and talk to me. I would have hitch hiked if I had felt safe doing so. I thought that, as a young woman, I could easily end up in a bad situation that way (getting raped, assaulted, kidnapped, robbed, etc.). If everyone was trustworthy, hitch hiking would be fun.

Well, I've seen the movie "The Hitcher"

I think that's the most I can put into this discussion. O_o

I've only done it twice...
once with my brother-in-law who was crazy and i was a teen, we wound up in an el camino with no back window, a mexican driver and sand piled in the bed. as we drove, the sand kept blowing into the cab.... glad it was a short ride.

The second was when I was a soldier at Ft. Bragg, N.C. and was heading into town. I actually wasn't thumbing, but some perv stopped and offered me a ride. Now, I was a fair-haired young man wearing cut-offs (blue jean shorts in the 70's), probably had my shirt off and while we were getting into town he let his hand slip over onto my knee 8O this freaked me out just like the other times perverts tried to talk me into going somewhere with them... so I told him to pull over and i'd get out immediately.

The only hitchhikers I have ever picked up were foreigners who were traveling the U.S.
They seemed to be a fun bunch of folks.

Once my daughter was born I quit giving rides ESPECIALLY whenever she was with me in the truck.

There's just no way i'd risk her life.

I Have always heard that thumbing rides around Europe was okay.

I did it a few times thirty years ago when I was young and foolish, now I'm old and wiser. Maybe there are safer ways to travel.

I hitch rides all the time, so long as they begin or end on a military base. You can damn near always trust anyone you run into on a military base. Most of the time folks will pull over and open their door for you if they see you walking, without ever sticking your thumb out or anything. I'll often do the same myself when driving around on base.

I think its dangerous. I have never done it and never will.
It wouldn't be impossible for an aspie to hitch a ride from someone...but dangerous for anyone to do this these days.

I used to hitch-hike a lot about 30 to 35 years ago.
Back then I was Male and poor therefore a lot safer, I have know people have hitch-hiked all the way across Europe.

I would not. It is impossible to necessarily know the true intentions of any driver, even for a hitchiker who is good at reading people's expressions/ cues. Adding to this is the fact that I am female, so my risk of serious injury/death increases greatly.
I would rather walk, unless walking definitely posed a greater danger ( like if it were -30 degrees outside, or if some crazy knife-weilding bandit were chasing me on foot and I had to jump into a car to get away).

Like Jack Kerouac says in 'On The Road', you would feel you have to amuse and talk to the person who gave you the ride... this would be the biggest problem for me.

Yeah, that WOULD suck, unless you were lucky enough to get picked up by someone who had your interests.
