As most of those here, I've never been much of a people person. I'm a loner in every sense of the word, even without the fact that I have troubles interacting with others on a regular basis. As such, the little social stimulation needed to keep me happy was always easy to acquire from sources that didn't need me to make any kind of real effort. School was in fact beneficial for this, but now that I've reached the age where I'm expected to stand on my own two feet I find that I must find a new venue for social interaction.

Living in the age that we do, the answer is obvious to most. Problem is, I don't believe in social interaction over the internet. I have very little trust for other people in general and that trust is near nothing when i can't even see their faces or read the actual meaning in their speech. It's too cleaned, too polished, too fake. I don't like it. It makes me feel like I'm wasting my time. I require more out of people than the standard feigned concern which is oh so easy to supply given that you don't have to actually spend any time thinking about it. And I'm not so high on so horse so that I don't realize that I have behaved in such a manner as well.

I take pride in the fact that I'm able to get by on my own. If one word was to surmise my entire persona, "pride" would certainly be a strong contender. Also "arrogance". But I know that I can't let foolish pride stand in the way of my own happiness.

To those who come here, why are you spending your time here? Is there something you gain from indulging me? Perhaps you're curious. Perhaps you're bored. Perhaps you just feel like welcoming a new face. Maybe you just want to help. Who knows?

In any case, here I am, diving headfirst into the maelstrom. Personally, it's curiosity. Perhaps I can find someone interesting here. Maybe learn something about my fellow man. If I can, then it was all worth it.

Thanks for taking the time.

i do always experience distance...

It's been said that the Internet was invented by people with Asperger Syndrome so that they could talk to one another. As a venue for social interaction, it has its advantages and disadvantages, but then so does every other communication medium ever devised. Pheromones, for example: so unreliable in humans. :)

I, for one, am grateful that the discussion-board format allows for editing and knocking one's prose into shape (polishing, if you will) before it gets hurled into cyberspace. In fact, I was just looking at another thread in these forums whose topic was something like, "What proportion of your posts do you delete before hitting the Submit button?" To which my response would be "Probably not enough of them."

Random fact: you were born in 1988, which is the bicentenary of the landing of the First Fleet in Australia and the founding of the colony of New South Wales.

And yes indeed, welcome here.

Hi Ouelis

welcome to WP.

Why do I spend my time here?
Well...when I was first diagnosed, I thought that I was the only person in the world who could possibly be experiencing the type of difficulties associated with AS. I wanted reassurance, that there were others out there like myself. My grandmother found this website before I did...she emailed me the link and here I am.
Why do I stay here?
Well...this website has helped me make many friends, some of them who have become very good friends. This is only online friends, though. Also, I learn so much every time I visit this site. There is always something that someone has posted, that I can relate to. There is always a discussion going on that I find interesting.

Anyway...sorry for the long post.

I hope you enjoy posting here, Ouelis.

two things, probably;

1) Hey, there are others out there like me....that came as a shock, and a weird sort of comfort.

2) now what do we do about it?

and I'm far more sensible and easy to understand through my fingers than my mouth...;)

That's a good question.

I come here because i'm studying the 'autistic spectrum' - who and what we really are and where we come from. I get a lot of ideas here. I've written one novel (self-published) in which I've explored the subject & i'm in the middle of the second one.

In their own way, I suspect that's what the rest are doing here too. This is something that, until recently, never existed. We're all learning/exploring.

You're right to distrust internet communication. But you'll find a lot less faking here than you meet in the 'normal' world.

Ouelis, that is the question. Discovery was great, I do not buy the whole story made up by the money making interests, but we do have something in common, that's uncommon.

We are different, one at a time bad, but in a mob, very reasonable, questioning, and enjoy exploring knowledge.

We have to meet here, for who would leave the house?
